Supermega is a variety YouTube channel with an emphasis on let's plays. The channel was started January 19th, 2016 by former Game Grump and Markiplier employees Matt Watson and Ryan Magee[1]. Supermega's video style consists of a very dry sense of humor with comedy bits (short impromptu comedy sketches) that blur the lines between what is real and what is a joke. Despite both growing up in South Carolina, Matt and Ryan did not meet until after high school when they're two separate YouTube channels began collaborating. Through out their lives, Matt and Ryan have been part of many different channels and worked separately as content creators before coming together to make the channel, Supermega.

History

edit

Matt and Ryan both grew up in South Carolina, though they did not know each other. Matt started on YouTube as a kid with his channel formatt24 where he posted sketch comedy with his friends. After high school Matt went to the University of South Carolina. Though Matt dropped out of college after just one year this time ended up being very important in shaping the future of his career as a YouTuber. During his time in college he met Jackson Tucker who he would become close friends with and make comedy sketches with on the channel, Kids w/ Problems. In February of 2015, Matt and Jackson entered their short film, FamilyCom, into a campus movie fest at University of South Carolina and won, pushing Matt to dive more deeply into video making.

Ryan began his carrier on his channel titled, Elirymagee, he posted here for a short while until he began to collaborate with Daniel Kyre, his long time friend. Daniel and Ryan met in high school while working for their school's news paper. After a few collaborations with Daniel the two of them started the channel Cyndago together because Daniel felt he was not getting enough credit for the video posted on Elirymagee. In 2013 Ryan and Daniel emailed YouTuber Markiplier about collaborating on a video, this started the trio's friendship and eventually in February 2015 Daniel and Ryan move in with Markiplier in his LA residence so they could work more closely on videos[2].

In May 2015, after having talked with and gotten to know Daniel Kyre over Facebook, Matt decided to fly out to Los Angeles to meet Daniel and Ryan and collaborate with their channel, Cyndago[3]. In August 2015, having hit it off with Ryan and Daniel, Daniel convinced Markiplier to hire Matt as a video editor. With this opportunity in his pocket, Matt moved out to LA to live with Mark, Daniel, and Ryan and officially joined as a full time Cyndago member[4].

In September of 2015 Daniel died by suicide. Out of respect Ryan announced in a video that he would no longer be continuing the Cyndago channel and would be taking a break from YouTube to figure things out[2]. During this time Matt transitioned back to Kids w/ Problems where he made videos alone for a while, but was eventually joined by Ryan. Ryan felt he was not as connected to Kids w/ Problems as he wanted to because the channel was solely owned by Matt, so the two of them decided to start a new channel together that they each would owned half of, and that is where Supermega began. On April 12th, 2016 Matt and Ryan posted their first video to Supermega announcing the beginning of their new channel that would focus on let's plays[5].

During the early years of their channel they continued working for Markiplier as a way to supplement their income. However, in June of 2016 the two of them quit working for Mark. Matt and Ryan have never made a public statement as to why they quit but after public speculation Mark made a Facebook post where came out and said that they stopped working for him because he was demanding too much of them and was at time, "...just being an asshole[6]." Supermega and Mark's public relation was bumpy for a while, having unfollowed each other on twitter. However, after a while the three of them all followed each other back and since then have reestablished their friendship.

In August of 2016 Matt and Ryan got hired by the Game Grumps to edit videos for them, Oneyplays, and KittyKatGaming[7]. Matt and Ryan continued working there until May 3rd, 2019 when they quit to focus on the growth of Supermega[8]. After quitting they maintained friendly relations with the Game Grumps, continuing to be allowed to work out of the Game Grumps office while Supermega set up their new work space.

Jackson and Harrison have another brother, Carson, who occasionally works the camera but is much less prominent in their videos. Jackson was a co-founder of his and Matt's old YouTube channel, Kids w/ Problems. More recently, he has been working for Supermega as their social media manager. Jackson has also become a major part of the channels popular series, Drunk Drawing, as the mixologist for the show. In 2019 Carson, Harrison, Jackson, and Matt started a multimedia art production company called, Lazy Eye.

edit

Tucker is a long time film making friend from South Carolina. He has been in a few videos on the show but has mostly worked as a behind the scenes camera man for Supermega's live videos. He also is the cameraman for the Game Grumps Show, 10 minute power hour.

Don is an artist from the Netherlands and works as Supermega's channel artist, he makes all of the thumbnails and other drawing for the channel, and has appeared in a few videos. He started working as the channel artist in 2017 [9]. His first appearance in a video on the channel was in SuperMegaCast episode 99, however, his most notable appearance is in, Drunk Drawing Sonic, where Matt and Ryan prank him by striping down Naked while he is drawing[10].

Kelly (FoolishKia)

edit

Kia is an American Animator and works as the first channel artist when Supermega started back in 2016. Kelly worked for them from the start of the channel to late 2017[9], and recently made an appearance on their podcast in episode 180.

Justin started a comedy sketch and reaction YouTube channel on May 28th, 2015[11]. Later, in July, 2018 Justin began editing videos for Supermega[12]. Since then, he has been featured in many video, mostly as part of comedic bits Matt and Ryan put him up to, but also as a featured guest. Associated YouTube Channels

edit

Formatt24

edit

Matt started his YouTube venture with the channel Formatt24. This channel was created in January 2008[14]. The channel consisted of crude comedy videos by a very young Matt Watson. During its time the channel did not receive much attention, however, in light of Supermega's success many hardcore fans have gone back to look at Matt's early videos. His video entitled, RE: Grandma Part 1, has become a bit of an inside joke within the fan community.

Elirymagee

edit

Ryan started on YouTube in August of 2011 on the channel, Elirymagee. However, since then he has privated all the content from the channel.

Cyndago

edit

Ryan's YouTube carrier began to take shape with Cyndago, the channel that him and his high school friend Daniel Kyre started on December 17th, 2012[15]. The channel consisted of sketch comedy staring Ryan and Daniel. On August 10th, 2015 after having been featured in a few video, Cyndago released a new video to YouTube called, CYNDAGO RETURNS! (New Member!), where they announced Matt officially joining the channel as a full time member[4]. However, this membership was short lived as in September 2015 Daniel died and the duo decided to stop posting on the channel because it didn't feel right to keep the channel going with out Daniel[2]. At this time Matt and Ryan made a short term move to Matt's old channel Kids w/ Problems before starting Supermega together.

Kids w/ Problems

edit

Kids w/ Problems is a YouTube channel created Matt Watson and his friend Jackson Tucker. Kids w/ Problems started posting in August of 2014 with a comedy music video, We Sell Drugs[16]. The channel like Cyndago was very much sketch comedy based. During early 2015 Matt transitioned over to Cyndago to work with Daniel and Ryan and stopped posting videos on Kids w/ Problems, but after Daniel's death in late 2015, Matt returned to the channel to continue uploading. Ryan after taking some time to reflect and decide how he wanted to continue his film carrier joined Matt and helped to produce several sketches. Because of the pre-establishment of the channel Ryan felt somewhat disconnected from the Kids w/ Problems channel so him and Matt decided together to start a new channel, Supermega.

Matt Watson

edit

In August 2018 Matt started posting to a new channel called, Matt Watson. This channel was made to be a place for Matt to post side projects he made in his free time outside of Supermega. The videos started as a mix of seemingly unrelated videos, however, recently the channel has begun posting comedy music videos made by and featuring Matt.

Markiplier

edit

Throughout Matt and Ryan's carrier on Cyndago the two became close and made many projects with YouTuber Markiplier, who was a childhood friend of Daniel Kyre[17]. Sometime in 2015 Matt and Ryan began editing for Markiplier on the side as a way to make money, however, in June of 2016 they left their job there without a public statement as to why. The two unfollowed Mark on Twitter leading to speculation that there was some sort of fall out. Later in October 2016 Mark made a Facebook post where he said that the two had left due to him being a harsh boss and putting too much pressure on the two[6]. The two to this day still have not spoken out on the specifics of the situation however, many times in videos they will talk about their time with Mark and it is clear that now they is no longer any beef and they they have a friendly relationship with each other.

Game Grumps

edit

Matt and Ryan have long been featured on the Game Grumps channel, starting in 2016 when they were first featured on the Game Grumps charity live stream, "Retro Give Grumps!". In August of 2016 Matt and Ryan on their podcast announced that they had started working as editors for the YouTube channel Game Grumps[7]. Since then they were featured more frequently on the Game Grumps channel until May 3rd, 2019 when they announced they were leaving the Game Grumps to focus on their own channel[8]. Supermega after leaving has maintained a friendship with the Game Grumps. The Game Grumps even allowed Matt and Ryan to continue using their office for their personal use while they worked on finding and moving into the new Supermega office, "The Supermega Plex."[18]

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong Dancing

edit

This is a channel made by Matt and Ryan in April of 2016 during their Supermega play through of Donkey Kong Country[19]. The channel has only 1 video, it is of a clip-it from Donkey Kong Country of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong dancing to the song, "I'm so Fresh you can Suck my Nuts."

Lazy Eye

edit

In 2019 Carson, Jackson, and Harrison Tucker in conjunction with Matt Watson formed the multimedia art production company called Lazy Eye.[20] As part of this start up they created the Youtube Channel on October 25th, 2019 as a place to post the music videos they produce[21].
