John Benwell is an obscure English author from the area around the Mersey river near Ormes Head, England. In 1857, he wrote the book "An Englishman's Travels in America, His observations of life and manners in the Free and Slave States". The book discusses his personal observations as he spends 4 years traveling from New York to Ohio, then down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers to Lousiana. Then across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida returned to New York viz georgia and South Carolina. He paints a picture of the early settlers, the pioneers, the indians of Florida and the life of a slave in the South before the Civil War.[1]
