Nicole DeBoom (born February 2, 1972) is an American CEO and founder of Skirt Sports, a women's sporting apparel line. She is also a retired professional triathlete and swimmer. DeBoom's inspiration for the company was based on her experience as a runner and she wore a prototype skirt for her win at the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin.[1]
Early Life
editDeBoom was born in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, she excelled at swimming and qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials. DeBoom graduated from Yale University.[2]
Career
editDeBoom started her own company, Skirt Sports, in 2005.[3] She designed the skirt she wore for her 2004 Ironman Wisconsin win, which was a prototype for her future products.[4] DeBoom used the $5K race prize money to invest in her future company.[5] DeBoom focuses her products on being practical for women athletes, designed to not interfere with running and other forms of athletic competition. The company saw over $10M in revenue from 2012 through 2014.[3]
In 2013, DeBoom teamed with Kathrine Switzer to create a clothing line to honor Switzer's achievement of running in the 1967 Boston Marathon as the first officially registered female competitor, completing the race despite physical assault from a race manager during the event.[6]
In 2020, Skirt Sports was acquired by ZOOMA Women’s Race Series, with DeBoom remaining as CEO.[7]
