The families participating with the organization are meant to work together, developing a sense of community and service. The name SixSeeds derives from the six Kingston family members who started with the belief that "if one family plants small seeds – whether they be effort, compassion, or just time – the results may grow to benefit many."

The organization develops Family Projects that are service projects pioneered by families in the SixSeeds partnership. These individual projects are located across the country and vary greatly in scope. But they all benefit from SixSeeds grants, technical assistance, and promotion.
