Grozny
Grozny is a city in Chechnya.

Elbaum was killed in 1994 while on assignment for Time magazine during the start of the first war in Chechnya, along with 18 other people. She was photographing in the streets of Grozny, the capital of the breakaway republic, when she was killed in a Russian bombing raid. She is the first journalist known to have been killed in that war.

She had gone to photograph the aftermath of an overnight raid that flattened a dozen small houses. Civilians were sifting through the debris when jets came over again, dropping several bombs.[4]

Elbaum was the first born child of Jude Elbaum. 14 years after her death, Judy still mourns the loss of her daughter. Although she claims that time has helped ease the pain, she still thinks of her daughter everyday. She says that she is reminded of the grief she felt when she sees wars on the news and when someone else loses a child. She can relate to that pain. [3]

Elbaum is just one of many journalists who have died on the job. Her name is presented on glass panels in the Freedom Forum Journalist Memorial at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Her name sits with approximately 1,800 deceased journalists who have died on assignment. [3]
