A z plasty is a very versatile plastic surgery technique, especially in burn reconstruction.
It consists of the transposition of two interdigitating triangular skin flaps. When drawn out on the skin the three limbs of the z plasty have a z shape, hence the name.
The z plasty design is described as having a central common limb and 2 lateral limbs
This technique can lengthen and re-orientate a scar.
Classification
- Functional z plasty
Lengthen a scar to help release a post-burn contracture
- Cosmetic z palsty
Change the orientation of a scar or part of a scar, allowing the scar to be hidden or disguised in natural skin creases, folds or wrinkles. Breaking up a linear or curved scar may improve the appearence
- Single z plasty
- Multiple z plasties
