Juana Azurduy de Padilla (12 July 1780 – 25 May 1862) was a military leader from Upper Peru, in present-day Bolivia, known for her role alongside her husband, Manuel Ascencio Padilla, in the guerrilla warfare that characterized the Spanish American wars of independence in that region.

editEarly life and marriage
editJuana Azurduy was born on 12 July 1780 in Toroca, a village near Chuquisaca (present-day Sucre), in the territory then known as Upper Peru, which currently makes up the country of Bolivia. At that time, the region was the northernmost part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, which was established in 1776 and had Buenos Aires as its capital.
