What I have learned in prof.X English 103 class today on Monday September 21st is how to use citations for my work. I also learned how to use the computer writings a little more and how it can come in handy for my future work. Prof. X also should me how easy her class will be this semester.

wild Seed, Chapters1-4

The story, “Wild Seed” by Octavia Butler, is a story that starts around the 17th Century in Africa and its about a being that can live forever by using its immortal powers. This being is capable of immortality by transferring his mind and his soul from one body to another causing it’s host to die. This being named “Doro” travels around the continent checking the “seed villages”, which he had made over many years in order to create a race of immortals with extraordinary powers creatures that resembles him. As he moves around one day he finds a woman named Anyanwu, a woman who possesses powerful healing skills and the ability to shape shift, meaning that she is able to take any human or animal shape. She is also immortal just like him, but she is a wild seed and is totally unrelated to neither him nor his offspring. Anyanwu has lived and has hidden among regular, mortal people for many years. When she met Doro, she thought about how she has never met anyone as immortal as herself or Doro. When they meet Doro convinces her to travel to America with him by telling her how they can have immortal children together. And since Anyanwu loved the idea of having children and not having to fear their death, immediately accepted.

Wild seed, Chapters 5-6

In chapter 5, as they are traveling on the ship to America, Anyanwu noticed Doro’s cruelty and how much the slaves aboard feared him and she asked herself why they all feared Doro and why she herself felt intimidated when being around him. Maybe it was because she knew that Doro could kill her because when he transfers his essence to other bodies, the essence of the hosts always die. Also, as seen in chapter 5 Doro seemed to be an arrogant, cold hearted person who wanted people to do as he demanded this is seen when Doro had arranged a marriage for Okoye, a former slave and even though he did not agree at first, he ended up agreeing because he had no other choice, Doro had sentenced him to death if he didn’t do as he demanded. In chapter 6, Anyanwu has too much power. Doro had a certain fascination with her, but he knew that she was too strong and he wanted to kill her since he wasn’t accustomed to keep alive people he could not control. He always wanted to have power and since he was indeed immortal he wasn’t calm around Anyanwu. However, even if Doro felt somehow threatened by the presence of another immortal person who was at least the same or even more stronger than him, he knew he could not kill her instead he needed her to be with him and breed because if he killed her “he would not acquire her malleability, longevity”. Later on, at some point in chapter 6, Anyanwu changes her shape to a dolphin and this is when Doro notices how powerful she really is because as a person she is as vulnerable as any other human being “but as an animal, she was beyond him as animals had always been beyond him”. This is when Isaac and Anyanwu spend much time together even through the lack of communication they had a certain connection that Doro noticed. He didn’t mind but he request chapter 5, as they are traveling on the ship to America, Anyanwu noticed Doro’s cruelty and how much the slaves aboard feared him and she asked herself why they all feared Doro and why she herself felt intimidated when being around him. Wild Seed, chapters 7-10

In chapter 7, Doro had gone to Wheatley, driven by his usual instinct because he felt that something wrong was happening to her. As Doro, approached to the place he found some individuals arguing and as he got close to them he noticed his son Issac. Isaac was one of his favorite and beloved sons. Isaac was like no other; he was a very honest and fair person and based on that many people always looked up to him to solve their problems and just talk about it in order to calm things down. Doro loved his son Isaac because he was like no other since he was actually the only person that didn’t fear him. Once Doro went to Isaac’s house and with his family and other than family members, this also included, Anyawu. When the members of the family were there, they started to discuss about breeding and just about other people. And while they were talking about it, Anyanwu was mad at Doro for being the way he was. Doro noticed how Anyanwu would always say things out of anger or just because how much she feared him or that was the way she felt about him. But she only did it in her head and when she finally did said them aloud “she compared him to one kind of animal or another”, from this he concluded that Anyanwu had just made herself the nearest thing he had to an enemy. In chapter 8, Nweke is still the focus of the chapter since she was introduced at the end of chapter 7 because she was facing transition. Doro and Anyanwu, were talking about it and Doro found Kweke quiet interesting thing he was sensing her a little bit too much and while she was in transition he had decided to stay for a little longer and this made Anyanwu question why. However, since the girl was facing transition Anyanwu was moving to the bed with the girl since “People in transition needed close physical contact to give them some hold on reality.” In chapter 9th, while talking to Anyanwu and seeing Thomas, Doro had come to learn about the healing powers of Anyanwu. Also, knew about the fact that she had conceived. It was clear that she had not meant to tell him but she did. She was also trying to keep Doro away from Thomas because she knew that Doro’s smile meant something else like hurting Thomas because she was clear to Doro, she preferred to share the bed with Thomas rather than Doro. In chapter 10, Isaac and Nweke had died. Arrangements were made for the funeral but on the day of such funeral Anyanwu was nowhere to be found. She had flew away from them and neither Doro or Doro's tracking sense could find her, it was as though she had ceased to exist.

Wild Seed, chapters 11 to "Epilogue."

In chapter 11, Doro seems to be thinking about Anyanwu. He clearly has not said her name aloud for years. In fact, there was no one alive in the state of New York who had known her. All of her sons, daughters and even her grandchildren had already died. Wars had taken some one her descendants, “the stupid 1812 War”. And well the other ones have died. And it was no surprise since she had been out for years. However, Doro was growing in terms of settlements in many places. He had also been breeding and he was optimistic about his achievements. But, he was not happy because he thought about Anyanwu, and the though of her would not let him be in peace. So, since he had been sensing her he finally knew where to find her. He went to look for her and when he went and reached to her home something strange happened he had seen the house but he did not go in. Something pushed him away and he stood with some of Anyanwu’s neighbors and here is when he heard about strange story based on a black would like figure that individuals around feared. But Doro knew they were talking about the person he was looking for, he didn’t think twice he knew that Anyanwu was there and had been taken a wolf like form. Doro found Anyanwu and realized how successful she had been after having that talk with her son. That son that could heal himself and “grow his arms.” Later in the chapter after Anyanwu faces Doro, he comes to learn that Anyanwu had married a woman named Denice. Also, as the chapter precedes Doro, wants Anyanwu to do as he says. But, she no longer wants this to happen to her, for Doro to always have control over her and she says, “You cannot always take everything”. And her is when Anyanwu sees herself stuck in a passage where she no longer wants to be alive as she says “Or just take my life. What is the good of living on a on and having nothing?” She does not see the reason of living a life where she only sees all her people fearing Doro.

•In the passage Doro goes to check if there was anyone left in the village when suppondly he discovered a "women". • The reader who is inexperienced in science fiction thinks that the author expects Doro to already know what really is a seed village.

Research Assignment #1

1.Octavia E. Butler born on June 22, 1947 and was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother. She grew up in an integrated community in Pasadena,California. During the time of segregation, Octavia Butler successful became a science fiction writer. Although Octavia had problems with herself being anti social and also being dyslectic, She still managed to become a reader and a writer living in a time where she was told that she couldn't fulfill her interests being a writer because of her ethnicity and competing within the science fiction genre authors which had a higher advantage. In fact, Octavia published a book called "Kindred" by listening to her classmate that was involved in the black power movement criticizing about the blacks being subservient to the whites for many generations. As time past on , Octavia managed to publish and sell a few more stories. She later was able to live of her writings and not worry about any other jobs and focused on whats she does best. Growing up, Octavia's mother wanted her to become a secretary but she refused and followed her path and her interests to reach where she has already accomplished. Octavia won many awards such as a Hugo for best short story, the Locus award and the science fiction chronicle award for best novelette. Unfortunately, Octavia had past away in 2006, leaving behind memorable accomplishments and being put in into Chicago State University’s International Black Writers Hall of Fame. 2.In fact, my impression of Octavia E. Butler was that she was a hard worker, intelligent , and a talented women. What really impressed me was how she strived for what she really wanted throughout the tough road that came across her lifetime, she still managed to succeed on what she really wanted. While she had her priorities, working and going to school she still dedicated time to her writings. Octavia inspired me not only by her work, accomplishments, awards and motivation, but by the tough road she had to face while achieving it.

Research assignment #2, Lynn, E. “Vampires Aliens, and Dodos,”

Robert Silverberg, a science fiction practitioner referred science fiction as easy as it seems , its a struggle to accumulate new ideas. Doro is 4,000 years old and he has the ability to transport into people carrying out a different identity, and people look up to him as god. Anyanwu is 300 years old, has the ability to take care of herself and others Anyanwu is immortal Doro wants to control Anyanwu so she can change his people.

“Haraway identifies Octavia Butler as one of "our storytellers exploring what it means to be embodied in high-tech worlds" (173). As a "theorist for cyborgs" (ibid.), Butler creates characters who break all boundaries and "make very problematic the statuses of man or woman, human-, artifact, member of a race, individual entity and body" This should be quoted because this shows the significance and impact this topics have on the writer. It also shows the typical battle of the sexes between male and female as of who dominates.
