Mainebiz is a statewide business newspaper based in Portland, Maine. The paper's current circulation is approximately 10,500.

History

edit

Mainebiz was founded by Jonathan Whitney in Portland in 1994. At the time, the paper was called Biz, was published monthly and covered the Portland area. In 1999, Worcester Publishing Ltd. purchased the paper and the following year relaunched Mainebiz with a new editorial staff, a statewide emphasis to its coverage, a bi-weekly publishing schedule and, over time, a thorough redesign.

In 2001, Mainebiz entered the digital age with the launch of its first website. Its website has since gone through many iterations.

In October 2006, Mainebiz launched The Daily, an e-newsletter covering business in Maine created each weekday by the editorial staff. It has since launched other e-newsletters, including Portlandbiz, a weekly e-newsletter covering business in the Greater Portland area, and The Weekend, which provides a list of events happening that weekend around the state.

In April 2007, New England Business Media, a new company formed by two long-time Worcester Publishing executives, acquired Mainebiz along with its sister papers: the Hartford Business Journal and the Worcester Business Journal.

In January 2009, Mainebiz reached a new milestone with the creation of Mainebiz Sunday, a television show covering business news in the state. Mainebiz Sunday is produced by ACH Productions.

Accolades

In 2007, Mainebiz received its fourth consecutive award for "Best Newspaper" from the national Alliance of Area Business Publications, as well as the award for "Best Overall Design" for the fifth time in six years.
