Following his education in Upton, Chester, Alan signed schoolboy forms for Wrexham in November 1969. Having progressed through the junior ranks he earned himself a professional contract in July 1973 aged 14. Alan made his Football League debut in January 1975, replacing the injured Joey Jones in a Third Division match at Charlton Athletic, which Wrexham drew 1-1. That was the first of his 199 league appearances for Wrexham. Alan was a major asset to the football club due to his versatility. This attribute was particularly in demand in the 1979/80 season when Alan appeared in nine first team positions, including goalkeeper! Alan's most memorable games were against Arsenal in the FA Cup Quarter Final of 1978, against Newcastle United, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest (also in the FA Cup) as well as appearances against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the League Cup.

Alan's final match for Wrexham was a 1-0 defeat at Reading in May 1983.

Following his football career Alan worked in Wrexham's Tetra-Pak factory for 26 years and still attends Wrexham matches.
