P.S. Your Not Listening is a nonfiction novel by Eleanor Craig, concerning her experiences in teaching a pilot program for special needs students.

Setting

edit

The book's setting is not explicitly mentioned, but is likely Central Grammar School, in Simsbury, Connecticut.

The events of the book take place over the year of 1968, when her husband was writing his first book.

Characters

edit
  • Eleanor Craig - a married teacher with four children and a writer husband (William Craig). Teacher of the Transitional Class.
  • Douglas Miller - a nine year old African American boy. Abandoned by his mother, he lives with his grandmother.
  • Kevin Hughes - a withdrawn boy with emotional problems. Passive.
  • Edward Conte (Eddie) - a seven year old boy with emotional problems and a difficult home life.[1]
  • Jonathan Bergman - an eight year old boy with imagination problems.[2]
  • Julie Neumayer- a girl with some slight problems. Anxious about being adopted.[3]

Student outcomes

edit

Most of the students benefited greatly from the program. Douglas returned to a regular school. Some of the students like Jonathan stayed on to continue their progress.

Kevin disappeared from the program entirely. His family packed their bags and left town in a hurry. His father was arrested as a suspect in a string of robberies. Kevin and his mother were last heard of in California.

Edward derived next to no benefit from the program. He was placed in a state institution, Green Valley Center. A private facility, Kirby School, was considered, but rejected.

Reception

The book also won several awards and was bought for a movie.
