There are many ways of defining sand art or animation. I believe that there are so many types of definitions as the number of sand animators.  For myself, there is an expression that defines this type of art as „giving life to the small crumbs of sand”.

Sand animation is a very intriguing art form where the artist uses hands and gestural movements to manipulate the sand on a light table. The animation is documented using either photography for stop-motion or can be videoed as a “live performance”.

It is different from other animation techniques such as clay or cut-out. After every scene shoot the drawing is transformed or erased to leave space for the following and does not exist anymore, neither can be recreated as it was. While a character in volume (from cardboard or clay) always exist and can be reused.

Nowadays, in india there are few people who practice this art. Sand Artist Rajat Kumar , Rahul Arya, Nitish Bharti (the runnerup of " Asia Got Talent Show”),Sarvam Patel, Hari Krishna are some of them. However, my favorites sand animation artists are the Rajat Kumar (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sand+artist+rajat+kumar ) and Rahul Arya ([1].)

My passion for sand animation started at Via University College in Lucknow, when, one of my favorite Sand Artist Rajat Kumar. show me a video of Girl Life`s live performance sand art during our College Festivel. I was impressed how expressive it can be and how real may the characters look. Since then I started to watch almost all videos and finally I decided to use this technique for my final movie at Via.  The teachers and Sand Artist Rajat Kumar encouraged me to continue with my passion and to send them all of my friends and family. Their words motivated me more and ,since then, I am trying  to improve my technique and I hope that one day I will fulfill my biggest dream of having my own studio.
