Anthony Camp, M.B.E., B.A.Hons., Hon.F.S.G., F.U.G.A., F.A.G.R.A., lives in London and was formerly the Director of the Society of Genealogists 1979-98, having joined the staff there as a Research Assistant in 1957 and being Director of Research 1963-79. He was awarded the M.B.E. for services to the Society in 1999, the first genealogist to be so honoured.
He is the author of Wills and Their Whereabouts (1963, 1974), Tracing Your Ancestors (1964 etc), An index to Wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 1750-1800 (6 vols. 1976-92), Everyone Has Roots (London & Baltimore, 1978), My Ancestor was a Migrant (1987), My Ancestors came with the Conqueror (London & Baltimore, 1988), Sources for Irish Genealogy in the library of the Society of Genealogists (1990 etc.), First Steps in Family History (1993 etc.), Royal Mistresses and Bastards: Fact and Fiction 1714-1936 (2007), innumerable articles, and the monthly "Diary of a Genealogist" in Family Tree Magazine (1984-98). He contributed the Introduction to the new edition of George Marshall's The Genealogist's Guide (Baltimore: GPC, 1967), a Foreword to Geoffrey Barrow's The Genealogist's Guide (London & Chicago, 1977), and feature articles to The Records of the Nation (1990) and The Oxford Companion to Family and Local History (1996, 2008).
He has lectured widely in the British Isles and overseas, speaking at the early Conferences in the States initiated by the National Genealogical Society (from 1981), at the Australasian Congress, Canberra (1986), at the Sesquicentennial Conference, Auckland, New Zealand (1990) and at the first Irish Genealogical Congress, Dublin (1991). He has accompanied ten study tours to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City (1989-2006). He oversaw the first weekend course in genealogy in 1965 and initiated the highly successful annual Family History Fairs in London in 1993.
He has an Honours Degree in Ancient and Medieval History, took a leading part in the foundation of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives in 1968 (he was a Vice-President, 1980-2011; Fellow, 2011) and was from 1987 to 2001 External Assessor for the University of London courses in Genealogy and the History of the Family organised by its Extra-Mural Department. He was a Trustee of the Marc Fitch Fund (1991-2003), a founder member of the Friends of the National Archives, a Freeman of the City of London (1984), has the Award of Merit of the National Genealogical Society (1984), is a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (1989), an Honorary Member of the Society of Australian Genealogists (1997), was President of the Federation of Family History Societies 1998-2000, and (in his native county) was President of the Hertfordshire Family History Society from 1982 to 2019.
He published Royal Mistresses and Bastards: Fact and Fiction: 1714-1936 in 2007 (ISBN 978-0-9503308-2-2; see http://anthonyjcamp.com) and On the City's edge: a history of Fann Street, London in 2016 (ISBN 978-0-9503308-3-9).
