HCI Projects edit

Dream Catchers edit

Dream Catchers is an online game that uses crowdsourcing to advance Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) research while spreading awareness of safe sleep guidelines. Dream Catchers is a spin-off of the Alzheimer’s citizen science game – Stall Catchers.[1]

Crowd Meter edit

CrowdMeter is a navigation app that displays sets of destinations and the estimated transmission risk associated with each option. The Human Computation Institute conducted epidemiological and behavioral simulations to inform the algorithms that power CrowdMeter’s deployment for the current COVID-19 outbreak.[2]

Civium edit

Civium is an integration platform and commerce engine for sustainable human computation. The purpose of Civium is to streamline information processing for the advancement of science and to commoditize cognitive labor and its products toward a new thinking economy. For citizen science practitioners, this could reduce development time and operating costs, enable rapid community engagement, and create revenue opportunities that help sustain projects.[3]

StarDust edit

StarDust is a citizens science project which finds particles in aerogel collectors using an automated scanning microscope to automatically collect digital images of the entire Stardust interstellar collector. The dust is detected by individual volunteer players with the aid of a special Virtual Microscope. The Stardust mission collected less than 100 interstellar dust particles in the absence of citizens science. They are tiny-only about a micron in size. These minuscule particles were captured in an aerogel collector about 1,000 square centimeters in size, and in about 150 square centimeters of aluminum metal foils.  Finding them is something like searching for a handful of ants on a football field while searching one 5 cm x 5 cm square at a time. With the help of citizens science, the research can be conducted in a rapid amount of time and more efficiently than it would take a handful of scientists and lab technicians to do alone.[4]
