Becoming pregnant while you are still at school

There is a well known fact saying: If you educate women, you educate a nation. Women are often caregivers for children, which means that women play an important role in the education of the future generation. However there are often barriers that can prevent women and girls from getting an education. One of this barriers is learner pregnancy.

In the past if a girl became pregnant at school she would be asked to leave for at least one year. This often meant that the girl did not ever return.Fortunately things are changing in Namibia, some people may think that allowing a learner-parent to return to school is wrong. The fact is ensuring that all learners complete their education is important for Namibia's progress and development.

Pregnant learners are now encouraged to inform a trusted adult, teacher, counsellor, a social worker or a health care provider as soon as possible about their pregnancy. The girl may return to school after birth of her child as the school is satisfied that she and the child are in good health.
