Elements of Principle and Design http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_elements_and_principles

    • In addition to expanding on each element I intend on adding a sample picture of each element and design principle because after all they are visual elements.***

Contents:

Introduction- The introduction is pretty solid but I intend to add citations where needed.

-Add to introduction- the difference between visual elements of art and the principles of design

1. The Visual Elements of Art- the basic visual material used to create designs.

-Line- the path of a point
-Color- add information about color theory
             - add chart explaining different colors and their meanings
   - Shape- perceivable shapes
               - positive space
               - negative space
   -Texture- surface quality
                 - different uses
   -Value- relative light and dark
             - high key
             -low key

2. The Principles of Design- ways to work with arranging elements

-Unity- nothing distracts from the work as a whole but still contains diversity
             - repetition
             -continuation
             -closure
-Emphasis/Focal Point- what is the "center of interest"
                                      -contrast
                                      -isolation
                                      -placement
                                      -absence of focal point
   -Balance- visual weight and importance
                -symmetrical
                -asymmetrical
                -radial
-Proportion- which elements contain most or more of the frame
-Scale- how large or small elements appear despite their actual size
-Contrast- elements fighting for the focal point, who wins?
-Movement- getting the since of motion in a still work
                     -diagonal lines
                     - flow between points
                     -burred images
-Rhythm/Pattern- repetition of elements that "mesmerize" the viewers eye
                             -size patterns and variations
                             - same elements not changed at all
                             - variety between elements
-Harmony- everything fitting together as a whole
-Space- or depth that gives a linear/ 3D perspective
-using color saturation to give linear perspective
-using overlapping elements to give depth appeal
   -Gradation- slowly fading colors
             -also produces a linear perspective

3. Artistic Use of Design Principles

-These are general guidelines not required elements
-Intentional miss use of the elements
   -Many more elements
-elements vary between teachers and artist
-Adapting a few elements as your own can create your artistic style
