Civic Art Gallery (Pieve di Cento)
editThe “Graziano Campanini” Pinacoteca Civica (Civic Art Gallery) is an Italian museum situated in Pieve di Cento. It is based in Pieve di Cento, near Bologna, and it is located inside the new cultural centre “Le Scuole”, which includes an area of 2460m² where there are over 1000 works of ancient, modern and contemporary art, and a library with an area of 2470m² that houses 28,000 volumes, 20 periodicals, 88 study places, and the historical archives fund of the Scolopi Fathers.
Place
editThe Pinacoteca was inaugurated in 1980 inside the eighteenth-century Mastellari Palace, situated in the main square of the town. In 1989 the exposition reached a major expansion thanks to a series of private donations. The building was hit by the earthquake of 2012, therefore renovation works were necessary to secure the exhibition.[1][2][3]
In the aftermath of a big renovation work of the former primary schools started in 2020, the 4th September 2021 the Pinacoteca was inaugurated inside the new cultural centre “Le Scuole”. The building not only houses more than 1000 works, but it is the new location of the municipal library.
Exposition
editThe ancient art collection includes works from the 14th Century; for example a wooden statue which represents the Virgin and the Child, a sculpture-reliquary of Spanish origin brought to Pieve di Cento probably by a pilgrim and gold-plated by Marco Zoppo in 1452; an Antiphonary called Code “A” that was acquired by the Santa Maria Maggiore collegiata (the parish church of Pieve di Cento) during the fifteenth century; the painting of Scarsellino (Ippolito Scarsella) depicting Saint Michael the Archangel fights against Satan.[4][5]
