Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

edit
  1. This article discusses systemic and structural racism in healthcare that is important in understanding health inequities endured by BIPOC populations. Patients of color are also most likely to contract diseases and have shorter life expectancies compared to their white counterparts because of these racist and discriminatory systems in place.
  2. Women's Health Centers are modern band-aid solutions to reducing health care disparities among women, including women of color, who can access health services and resources otherwise unavailable because of poor insurance and poor socioeconomic status.

Article 1: Race and Health in the United States

Lead section: The lead section is strong as it is concise while conveying the main topic and points to be discussed in the article which is: health disparities among certain vulnerable racial and ethnic groups. The author gives reasons for these disparities- both current and historical- that is later discussed throughout the article including: genetics, socioeconomic factors, and racism. Content: The article touches on a variety of topics that intersect with race and health disparities from environment, disease, mental health, and institutionalized racism- just to name a few. Each subtopic is briefly summarized with statistics embeded. Although the article includes up to date citations, some of the subtopics include statistics that lack recent trends & numbers. The article brings light of the issue of underrepresentation and racism among many racial and ethnic groups including African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. One section on White Americans includes content that possibly does not fit with the article. For example, White Americans in the U.S. are compared to their Whiter counterparts in other wealthy countries, making them seem poor and as victims. Although this may be true, this distracts from the main point of the article.

Tone & Balance: The article is neutral and professional as most statements/claims are evidence-based and almost every subtopic includes statistics to provide the reader with a realistic and accurate argument. The article represents multiple vulnerable ethnicities and races although it could be better as some subtopics miss stats on other ethnicities.

Sources and References: The article includes more than 200 sources and many of them are published as recent as 2023. Some of them are journals while others come from other wikipedia articles.

Organization & writing quality: The article includes subtopics with descriptions that are concise and evidence-based. Some could embed more recent evidence-based statements with stats.

Images & Media: There is one video from 2019 of a woman feeling ignored as a Black mother in the U.S.

Talk Page Discussion: "Black Lives Matter", "Culture", "United States", "Ethnic Groups", and "American Politics" were rated top-importance according to the content discussed in the article. There was some criticism of how other ethnic and racial groups (Other than African Americans) were excluded for many of the subtopics or they were followed up by a stat regarding Black Americans.

Overall Impressions: Overall, the article discussed many evidence-based points that resonated with the topic: racism and health. To improve the article, there could be more inclusion of other ethnicities and minority groups such as in topics discussing disease.

Article 2: Feminist Health Center

Lead: A brief summary of the definition and purpose of a feminist health center. The lead could provide more insight on the organization of the article.

Content: The article focuses on centers mainly serving reproductive health services where women acquire accessible services as well as embrace a "self help" attitude towards healthcare such as performing illegal abortions and being educated on how to take cervical exams on oneself. The article also mentions a history of how these feminist centers battle internal and external conflicts. There can be more said about the women's history movement. There lacks content on other types of feminists and women heath centers that provide services other than reproductive services. Women of other demographics and races- namely women of color- face additional barriers to health care and find these services helpful while they reduce gaps in health equity.

Tone & Balance: The article could be more neutral and generalizes an idea based on one quote rather than a reliable stat.

Sources & References: The article includes sources from journals and online new-papers but lack any recent sources from 2020 to present.

Organization & writing quality: The subtopic on "Differences from Mainstream Health Clinics" is very general and not detailed and the info can be further categorized. The overall organization of the article can be improved where subsections can be added to give the article more organization and detail/specificity.

Images & Media: Absent.

Talk Page Discussion: No discussions are present but this article is rated Start Class & Feminism and Women's History are rated Mid-importance.

Overall Impressions: The article needs better organization and can go into detail in other subtopics related to women's health centers and women's heath. The article can provide more examples of other women's health centers such as Planned Parenthood and how these services differed in use and accessibility across states (some more conservative than others). The article is somewhat disorganized and more work needs to be done to make it more complete.
