Tom Owen-Hughes
editCareer and Education
editProfessor Tom Owen-Hughes completed his bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Edinburgh from 1984 to 1988. He then went on to complete his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford from 1989 to 1993 [1].
In 1998, Prof. Tom Owen-Hughes was recruited to Dundee from The Pennsylvania State University where he had worked as a postdoctoral research fellow with Professor Jerry Workman [2]. During his time at the University of Dundee, he became a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow and was appointed as the Director of the Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression.
He was also a contributor to the Science Saturdays: Guardians of Genome project in 2018 - a VR game about repairing damaged DNA aimed at all ages, which was awarded the Brian Cox Prize for Public Engagement Project of the year [4].
Research
editProf. Tom Owen-Hughes’ research at the Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression is centred around chromatin structure and function [2]. His research group has investigated the functions of ATP dependent remodelling enzymes and their interplay with the modification of histones and histone chaperones to regulate gene expression [2]. The experimental approaches used include biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and functional genomics. Prof. Tom Owen-Hughes has an extensive publication list centred around the techniques mentioned above [2].
Awards and Achievements:
edit- 2000: EMBO Young Investigator - for mechanisms for ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling [9].
- 2002: The Colworth Medal of the British Biochemical Society [8].
- 2007: Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship [2].
- 2007: Member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation [7].
- 2009: Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh [6].
- 2012: Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship [5].
- 2018: Owen-Hughes becomes the Dundee representative of the SCMI (Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging) management committee [10].
- Executive Member of SULSA (Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance - an association of 11 Scottish Universities with the aim to advance life science research) [11].
