About the project

edit

This project was born on June 20th, 2021. It is an arbitrary long-term goal I have set for myself (although other people are welcome to help out, of course!) to improve the coverage of mensae on Mars. It is a sad fact that the mensae will probably never have enough information about them to reach featured article status, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be improved! The overarching goal of this project is to get all of the mensae to GA-class.

Goals

edit
Core Goals Facilitatory Goals
  1. Promote all notable mensae to Stub-class (0/3)
    1. I.e. create articles for missing mensae
  2. Promote all mensae to Start-class (7/11)
  3. Promote all mensae to C-class (2/11)
  4. Promote all mensae to B-class (2/11)
  5. Promote all mensae to GA-class (1/11)
  6. Promote all mensae to FA-class (0/11)
    • This is probably not possible, and I will likely turn my attention to other geological features before even getting close to reaching this mark.
  7. Turn the Martian mensae into a Featured Topic (0/1)
  1. Add scholarly information about the mensae published after 2010 (2/11)
    • In cases where a rover is in the area, add all information since the rover's arrival.
    • Reason for 2010 deadline is because sometimes our understanding of the mensae has changed, and if we go back far enough we might start accidentally adding outdated information.
  2. Intersperse images with text in an aesthetic way (2/11)
  3. Create a featured image relevant to the project (0/1)
  4. Create an article List of Mensae on Mars (0/1)
    • Make it a Featured List (0/1)
  5. Finish the mensae map template (1/1)

Interactive image map of the global topography of Mars, overlain with locations of Martian mensae. Coloring of the base map indicates relative elevations, based on data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor. Whites and browns indicate the highest elevations (+12 to +8 km); followed by pinks and reds (+8 to +3 km); yellow is 0 km; greens and blues are lower elevations (down to −8 km). Axes are latitude and longitude; Polar regions are noted.

Mensae without articles

edit

Juventae Mensa, Nia Mensa[1]

Many more; there are 38 in total (oh god).[2]

I suspect (and hope) most of these won’t need articles, and can just have a blurb in the list of mensae on mars.

I have tried to assess notability below; if more than or equal to 5 pages of google scholar articles, I labeled it notable. Of course, content matters, and so it may be that something is not notable after all, or is notable when I thought it wasn’t.

Reading List

edit

In this section I will cite some papers that I believe have broad applicability to the mensae.

This paper investigates ancient river deltas at the mensae.[5]
