We are a group of 15 doctorate students, and we all study some aspect of algae, and the microorganisms that are associated with these algae, also known as the microbiome of an organism. The region surrounding an alga is sometimes called the phycosphere. Algae are defined as any photosynthetic organism that grows in an aquatic environment, that is not a vascular plant.

We started our PhD. studies in 2015, and we are based in six different universities within Europe. Our interests range from understanding the algal microbiome in large scale ecological experiments, to laboratory studies and those in industrial-sized algae culturing facilities, and in silico experiments. We also study a range of microorganisms associated with algae, such as bacteria, fungi and oomycetes, and the interaction between the algae and its microbiome ranges between symbiotic or mutualistic to pathogenic.

We are passionate about all sorts of biology, and hopefully we can add some of the knowledge we have to Wikipedia. Algae are awesome!
