User:Alansohn/Fictional Obsessive-Compulsives

Fictional characters displaying characteristics of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder have been a common occurence in works of fiction.

This trope can be seen in the television series Monk, which debuted in 2002 on the USA Network, featuring Tony Shalhoub in the title role of Adrian Monk. The New York Times described his "precise, respectful portrayal" of the character and his fears of human contact and dirt as making him "a champion of those with obsessive-compulsive disorder".[1] The network has created a "What is OCD?" page, noting that there are six million individuals in the United States, offering viewers of the program information and support from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.[2]
