Discussion: Thinking about sources and plagiarism edit
Blog posts and press releases are considered poor sources of reliable information, because they may contain biased and opinionated information. Blogs and press releases can be subjective and inaccurate, meaning they may contain information that is not true or tries to sway the reader in a particular direction.
Some reasons why you might not want to use a company’s website as the main source of information about that company is because the company may portray their information in such a way that puts them in a good light, even if the company may not being doing well or may be under controversy.
The difference between a copyright violation and plagiarism is that a copyright violation is using someone’s work without their permission, and plagiarism is using someone’s work and claiming it as your own. Public domain refers to work that belong or is available to the public, and is not subjected to copyright. Fair use allows for limited use of copyrighted material without needing the owners permission.
There are several good techniques to avoid close paraphrasing and plagiarism. Paraphrasing, meaning putting something in your own words, is a good way to avoid plagiarism. Citing is another effective way of avoiding plagiarism. Quoting a source is another technique of avoiding plagiarism. Quoting is used when the writer uses another person’s work word for word.There are multiple formatting guidelines that can be followed, including: APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. In-line citation can also be used and is very effective.
Copying sources from other sources is considered plagiarism, and will result in a copyright violation. One should use their own words in writing an article and having the sources properly cited.
Discussion: What's a content gap? edit
I think a content gap is a block or piece of information that is missing or irrelevant. Some possible ways of identifying them would be disturbed flow in article structure or discontinuity between paragraphs.
Some reasons a content gap may arise organization errors when one is fixing up multiple articles. There may be information that is missing or can not be found. Some ways to remedy content gaps would be to declare the information is missing, to thoroughly read and edit through an article to make sure everything within the article is relevant to what the article is supposed to be about.
It should not matter who writes Wikipedia article so long as they provide good accurate information that has proper sources is displayed in a manner that conveys the information well. Only civil engineers should not write wiki articles because we are not well informed in all of the disciplines of that Wikipedia articles cover. Civil engineers would be well suited to write articles about the aspects of the civil engineering field. Our specialized training offers the reading public that uses Wikipedia exposure to a hopefully well-written, and well-cited article that adhere to all standards that Wikipedia wishes to uphold.
To be "unbiased", means to be impartial, neutral or objective about something. To be "biased" is to be subjective, opinionated, or towards a particular feeling or thought about something.
Recommendations for creating an article in Wiki on this journal edit
In creating an article on Wikipedia, I would first suggest to conduct thorough research on the main topic of the article, with keeping a list of the sources used so they can be properly cited. Make sure that the information being used in article is not outdated and have proper sources. While writing the article, it is important to make sure that everything in the article is relevant to the article topic and there are no diversions to other topics and ideas. Ensure there is no bias or sway towards a particular thought or idea, and ensure that the ideas produced are thoroughly developed and followed through. Overall, the article should be consistent and flowing; the reader should be left with some idea or knowledge after reading the article.
