John MacNiven (17 November 1849 - 10 July 1894) was a Scottish painter.
Life
editHis father was Peter MacNiven (1 April 1802 - 28 November 1878) from the Isle of Lismore in Argyll. He was a beamer in a printfield.
His mother was Isobel Maclaren (born c. 1811) from Glasgow.
John MacNiven was born in the Gorbals in Glasgow on 17 November 1849.

editHe died in Skye on the shore of Loch Scaviag overlooking the Isle of Soay, on a wilderness and painting trip with his artist friend Walter McAdam. He was buried in Eynort, Skye.[1]
