Ir. Soeratin Sosrosoegondo (17 December 1898 – 1 December 1959) was an Indonesian civil engineer in the colonial era who is regarded as founder of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), the governing body of football in Indonesia.

Early life (until 1927) edit

Soeratin was born from the educated class. His father, R. Soesrosoegondo, was a teacher in Kweekschool and author of Bausastra Bahasa Jawi. His mother, R.A. Srie Woelan, was the younger sister of Soetomo, founder of Budi Utomo.

After graduating from Koningen Wilhelmina School in Jakarta, Soeratin enrolled in an advanced technical college at Hecklenburg, near Hamburg, Germany in 1920 and graduated as a civil engineer in 1927.[1]

Founding PSSI (until Independence Wars) edit

Upon his return to his homeland, Soeratin immediately worked for a Dutch building company, Sizten en Lausada, based in Yogyakarta.Soeratin became the only native person who sat parallel to the commissioner in the company. However, based on a high sense of nationalism, he decided to resign.

After working at Sizten en Lausada, Soeratin was more active in the field of movement. On one occasion, Soeratin realized that soccer could be one of the platforms for sowing nationalism among youth, in accordance with the grains of the Youth Pledge pronounced on October 28, 1928.

For the sake of realizing his ideals, Soeratin diligently held meetings with football figures in Solo, Yogyakarta and Bandung, which were carried out in secret to avoid the ambush of the Dutch Police (PID).[2]

Then, when holding a meeting at the Binnenhof hotel on Jalan Kramat 17, Jakarta, Soeratin met with the chairman of VIJ (Voetbalbond Indonesische Jakarta), Soeri and other officials. It was there that the idea of ​​the national football organization was formed.

Furthermore, the maturation of the idea was carried out again in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Solo which was carried out with several national movement figures, such as Daslam Hadiwasito, Amir Notopratomo, A. Hamid, and Soekarno (not the future president of Indonesia).

Meanwhile, for other cities, ripening is done by personal contact or by courier, as with Soediro who is the Chairperson of the Magelang Youth Association.

Then on 19 April 1930, representatives from VIJ (Sjamsoedin, RHS students), BIVB - Bandoengsche Indonesische Voetbal Bond (Gatot), PSM - Yogyakarta Yogyakarta Football Association (Daslam Hadiwasito, A. Hamid, and M. Amir Notopratomo), VVB - Vortenlandsche Voetbal Bond Solo (Soekarno), MVB - Madioensche Voetbal Bond (Kartodarmoedjo), IVBM - Indonesische Voetbal Bond Magelang (EA Mangindaan), and SIVB - Soerabajasche Indonesische Voetbal Bond (Pamoedji). From the meeting, the decision was made to establish PSSI.


Later years and death (until 1959) edit

In his later years, Soeratin lived in poverty. He passed away in 1959.[3]

Legacy edit

His legacy in Indonesian football honoured with his name engraved in a trophy contested in a national junior football tournament, the Soeratin Cup.
