Alan J Cohen is an American geoscientist and energy leader. He has served as a Program Director at the United States National Science Foundation. He also worked in leadership and advisory roles in: academia, government and industry at the University of Louisiana, the United States Department of Energy, at Royal Dutch Shell as Chief Geophysicist, and at several high-tech companies focused most recently on renewable energy. His expertise lies in use-inspired technology development and translation into commercial solutions that can address major societal and industrial challenges. He has also forged many successful partnerships between government, industry, academia and national labs. He has published on novel approaches to geothermal energy production and carbon storage, including advances in real-time monitoring and decision analysis. He holds a BSc in Chemistry from McGill University, an AM in Physics from Harvard University, and a PhD in Chemical Physics from Harvard. He has worked on all continents and remains interested in opportunities to lead, enable and accelerate a balanced energy transition, using renewables and fossil energy, that is profitable, scalable and sustainable.
