Tilottama Barooah - Eminent educationist, former Director of Secondary Education of Assam, India

Early life

Born in Shillong, Tilottama Barooah stood out to be an exceptionally talented and bright child who proved herself in many fields like music, dance, sports and other social activities. She dared and challenged herself to be the best and strived for excellence. Tilottama was a good Indian Classical dancer, good sports woman who went on to be a dedicated National Cadet Corps India officer and state commissioner Girls’ Guides.

Career and Work Experience

After completing Masters in Education from Gauhati University, Tilottama moved to Mumbai with her sister Monurama to join Tata Institute of Social Sciences and obtain her 2nd Masters degree in Social Science. She excelled in academics, achieved distinction, honors and earned scholarship all through out as a student. She began her professional career as a teacher in Shillong, held several government positions, including Inspector of Schools of undivided Kamrup district, Secretary of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education and Additional Director of Elementary Education, retiring in 1996 as Director of Secondary Education, Assam. She also served in various other capacities, notably as Educational Consultant for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in NE region, Member of Assam branch of Indian Red Cross Society, Member of Guwahati Management Association and Member of Rotary Club of South Guwahati. • Nominated as a Member of (a) the Committee constituted to carry out Inspection of Institutions for Grant of Accreditation under the National Institute of Open Schooling, (b) TOC Commitee, (c) Selection Committee for selection of executive assistance etc. of NIOS.

Honors, Awards and Recognitions

Recipient of several awards and honors, she represented her country with distinction in several educational programs abroad. She was considered as an excellent ambassador and representative for her country. “Recipient of Great Achiever of India Award” in 1999 & “Bharat Jyoti Award” in 2000 from India International Friendship Society Delhi. Recipient of “Lifetime Excellence Award” in 2001 from 21st Century Development Council, New Delhi. Honored by American Biographical Institute, U.S.A. in its 9th Edition of International Who’s Who of Professional and Business Women for 2001.

Personal life

Tilottama (Bulu) was the 3rd youngest child of Sailendra Kumar Dutta and Kunjalata Dutta. She was raised in Laban, Shillong, Meghalaya and was very closely associated with Assam Club. She was married to an Orthopedic surgeon for a brief period. This relationship did not last long. Tilottama was dedicated to her career, work and social services. She published articles regularly on Education in News papers and various Magazines, broadcast-ed talks in Radio & interviews telecast in T.V. on general education, adult education and Non-Formal education. Many at times she attended National Workshop of Educational Broadcasting organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Govt. of India and acted as resource person in the educational Workshops / Seminars. She travelled extensively all throughout India, visited United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, France, Australia including Tasmania, Manila (Philippines) and Canada. Tilottama was a well connected and respected personality in the society. On 29 June, 2017 Tilottama Barooah passed away at her Silpukhuri, Guwahati residence due to a massive cardiac arrest.
