Episodes 6194, 6195 and 6196 of the BBC soap opera EastEnders were broadcast on BBC One on 31 December 2020 and 1 January 2021. The episodes mark the start of a storyline that sees the character Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) deal with depression and historic sexual abuse.
Plot
Mick Carter calls The Samaritans and speaks to Joe, a counsellor. In the background, there are fireworks being let off in the Square outside The Queen Vic. Mick explains that he and Linda Carter have separated and he is struggling to cope. He has a flashback to when he was a child in a care home and tells the counsellor that he cannot sleep. He and Linda have been to see their son Lee to tell him that they're separating. Lee asks why they're separating and Linda says that their marriage is not working. She tells Lee that she is going to New Zealand to see Nancy Carter with Ollie Carter. Mick explains that he has nothing left to offer. Joe tries to point out to Mick that he cannot blame himself and Mick points out that he has always been pushing people away. Lee realises that Mick is suffering from depression and Linda offers to not leave the country but Mick tells her to go. He tells Joe that Frankie Lewis told him that he was weak. He starts panicking and he leaves his flat to find more fireworks being let off in the Square. He looks across the Square to The Queen Vic public house. Joe tells him that he does not have to face this alone. Mick enters the pub and makes his way to the rooftop telling Joe that he cannot carry on living. Lee convinces Mick that he needs to talk to someone and Mick tells Joe that he started having flashbacks to his childhood when he met Frankie. He tells Joe that Katy Lewis told him not to say anything about what happened in the childrens home. He then admits to Joe that Katy abused him as a child.
In Episode 6194 Mick goes to the home of Max Branning looking for Linda. Stacey is cooking breakfast when Tommy realises that he cannot find Arthur. Linda meets Sharon outside The Queen Vic and promises to see her before she leaves. Mick goes to Katy's home and she tries to refuse to see him but he pushes past her. He confronts her about their past and she tries to tell him not to blame himself. She catches him rummaging through her chest of drawers. He finds love letters that he sent to her when he was a child and Katy threatens to call the police. He accuses her of abusing him and she denies it. Mick asks Katy if Frankie is his daughter and she initially denies it, after perseverance she admits that Frankie is Mick's daughter. She says that she lied to protect Mick and says that she will accuse him of rape if he goes to the police. She says that they loved each other and that the rest of the world would not understand. Mick tells Katy that she makes him sick and that he loves Linda. Katy says that if she tells anyone she will blame him. Phil checks with Patrick Trueman that it is still OK to see Raymond Fox later. Stacey and Kat go looking for Arthur and Kush and Stuart Highway wishes them a happy new year. Stacey calls Martin while Ruby makes a phone call to Kush who thanks her for helping him escape with Arthur. Kush tells Arthur that they're going on an adventure. Max tells Linda what they can do in New Zealand and tells her that it will be a new life for them. Linda bumps into Tiffany who offers to take her for a drink and Linda upsets her by telling her married life is hard. She meets Sharon who tells her that moving abroad is a big decision. Max tells Jack that he should reunite with Denise and Jack says that he will miss Max. Kat, Stacey and Martin go to see Phil to see if he knows where Kush is but Phil hasn't heard anything. Stuart sees Callum in the Square and offers to take him for a drink but is stopped by a police officer. Linda goes to meet Max on the Millennium Bridge and tells him that she will not be going to New Zealand with him. Mick runs home to Linda but realises that she has already left, he collapses on the floor overcome with grief. At the police station, Stuart meets DI Thompson while Callum is calling Rainie Highway to try and find out why Stuart has been taken to the police station. When Rainie hangs up on Callum, Ben tells him not to worry. DI Thompson says that he will charge Stuart with attempted murder and tells him that he is looking forward to a catch up with Callum. Patrick takes Raymond to see Phil and Raymond asks who he is so Patrick tells him that Phil is a friend.Linda returns home and Mick tells her about Katy and Frankie. Linda mistakenly thinks that Mick has had an affair with Katy and Mick explains that he was abused as a child. Linda tries to encourage him to report it to the police but he refuses and says it is difficult for men to report sexual abuse. Martin returns home visibly upset after not being able to find Kush but tells Ruby that they will not be able to get far without a passport, unaware that Kush has had two passports delivered. Jack goes to visit Denise and realises that she is struggling to cope after Lucas has returned and offers to let him move in with her. Sharon calls Jack and tells him that he needs to come to the Queen Vic to collect Max. Stuart tells Callum that DI Thompson wants to speak to him and tells him that he'll go to jail if necessary which Rainie tells him is rubbish. Callum tells Jack that he needs help and says that he wants to expose that Thompson is corrupt.
