Isabelle Georges is a French singer of musical comedy, french variety and Yiddish music. She is also a dancer, actress and theatre-maker.

Isabelle Georges comes from a family of artists. Her grandmother is a cellist, pianist and stage musician for the theater, and her father is a poet for a part of her life. It is her mother, a lyrical singer, who introduced her to singing at an early age.

Raised in Maisons-Laffitte, she suffers from a serious infection of the kidneys and is hospitalized several times between her 3 months and 8 years at Necker Hospital[1]. It is there, in bed, that Isabelle Georges discovers Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. She dreams of dancing. As soon as possible, she enrolled in classical ballet lessons first, then tap dance.

Isabelle Georges trained in the musical comedy business in the early 1990s. She went to study in England at the London Actors Center and did internships in the United States. At this time, there is no educational structure in this field in France.

At 17, she performed on the Champs-Élysées cabaret and took part in the Florent class.

She joined the company Victor Cuno with the show From Harlem to Broadway. Then, Jérôme Savary hires him for the show Marilyn Montreuil.

Career

It is Jean-Paul Lucet who offers him his first big role, Charity Barnum, in the musical Barnum. She meets her mentor and singing teacher Jean Salamero.

She starts on the Parisian stage with Michel Legrand who proposes him a first role in The Passe Muraille in 1997 (Molière of the best musical show 1997)[2].

Two years later, in 1999, she directed, under the direction of Jérôme Savary, in La Périchole, then under the direction of Jean-Louis Grinda in Chantons sous la pluie (Molière for the best musical show in 2001).

In 2000, she performed in Titanic The musical at the Royal Opera of Wallonia where she met Maury Yeston and Frederik Steenbrink. With the latter, she creates Une étoile et moi ..., dedicated to Judy Garland in December 2002 (show with which she will perform at the Fringe Festival Of Edinburgh in 2005, at the Harrogate Theater (United Kingdom) in 2005-2006, in Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2007 (Australia), Philharmonic in Liège 2010 and Théâtre Antoine 2011).

In 2005, Isabelle Georges called René Urtreger to ask him to accompany him for an album dedicated to jazz standards. She invites him to a performance of a show around the French song, which he hates. But on stage, he finds Isabelle Georges, the one who will consider as his daughter, "so nice" that he accepts. From this meeting is born the album Something to Live For[3].

In 2006, Isabelle Georges released, with the band Sirba Octet, an album Du shtetl on Broadway (Naïve). This album presents how Afro-Americans and Jewish emigrants from the East have solidarily shaped the repertoire of the Musical Comedy[4].

In 2007, she shared the stage with Jean-Claude Dreyfus in the show "Petit Traité de manipulation" and created "La French Touch" at the Fringe Festival D'Edinburgh.

In 2010, she and Cabaret Terezin, together with Josette Milgram, wrote songs written by the prisoners of the Theresienstadt ghetto camp[5]. She continues to learn Yiddish, a language practiced by many Broadway composers, and their families when they arrive in the United States.

After many collaborations she sets up her own shows with her partner Frederik Steenbrink[6].

Padam Padam, in 2010, tells the story of Norbert Glanzberg[7] (composer of music of films and several tubes of the French song). Isabelle Georges conceives this show with Jean-Luc Tardieu, following a request of the orchestra of Mulhouse which makes a retrospective on the work of the composer. The discovery of her repertoire makes her want to research her life and she is passionate about her story. The show is a mix between story and songs[8]. On stage, Isabelle Georges is accompanied by a trio of musician / actors. Frederik Steenbrink (piano and vocals), Jérôme Sarfati (double bass and piano), and Edouard Pennes (gypsy guitar)[9].

In 2012, she creates Broadway enchanted. The initial project was a musical program for educational concerts organized by Radio France[10]. In this show, Isabelle Georges traces the history of musical comedy from its beginnings in the United States, until the twentieth century. On stage, she is accompanied by Frederik Steenbrink (piano and vocals), Jérôme Sarfati (bass), Edouard Pennes (gypsy guitar), David Grébil (drums). Enchanted Broadway is played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 at Assembly Hall[11] as well as La Folle Journée de Nantes in 2014.

In 2014, it's the Chante! Singing tour, directed by Anne Bourgeois, that Isabelle creates around swing (from Cole Porter to Claude Nougaro)[12].

In 2015, she plays Mrs. C, the lead role, in the very first musical version of Stefan Sweig's new 24 hours of a woman's life, published in 1927[13].

The show "Amour Amor" is created in 2016. It is dedicated to the "stages" of love, from the first emotions to separation. On stage, she is accompanied by Frederik Steenbrink (musical direction, piano, vocals), Édouard Pennes (Guitar, double bass, trumpet) and Adrien Sanchez (saxophones, flute, percussion & piano)[14].

His singing tour Oh Là Là! created for the 2015 edition of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is scheduled at London's Saint James Theater as part of the London Cabaret Festival as well as during the closing week of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016 in the Famous Spiegeltent and, for a whole season at Bal Blomet 2018/2019[15].

In 2017, Isabelle releases the Vienna Paris Hollywood CD at Harmonia Mundi and creates Happy End, her recital in three languages ​​for voice and piano at the France Musique Occitanie Montpellier 2017 Festival, programmed during the Folle Journée de Nantes 2018 and at the Bal Blomet in 2018.

In January 2018, she created C'est si bon, a program around French song with Frederik Steenbrink, Roland Romanelli (Barbara accordionist), pianist Jeff Cohen and Pau Pays de Béarn orchestra under the direction of Fayçal Karoui in the France Music Festival Occitanie Montpellier 2018.

In January 2019, she created Que du Bonheur, a second program around French song with Frederik Steenbrink, Roland Romanelli, Jeff Cohen and the orchestra Pau Pays de Béarn under the direction of Fayçal Karoui.

Isabelle performed with Bruno Fontaine at the Cannes Film Festival 2019, on the occasion of Sacem's tribute to director Bertrand Tavernier. He presented on this occasion a new episode of his "Journey through French cinema"[16].

Isabelle plays Isadora Duncan at the Avignon Festival 2019 in a musical piece freely inspired by the latter's life, "Isadora", at the theater Les 3 Soleils.
