OLUFUKO FESTIVAL

Olufuko is a Oshiwambo word meaning wedding. This festival was officially opened 23 August 2012 by H.E. [Dr,. S.Nujoma], Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and Father of the Namibian Nation. (Olufuko Patron) in Outapi. Images[3] Outapi is a town in Omusati Region in Namibia.[4][5]

Definition

Olufuko is a process where girls from the age of 14 years old are prepared to womanhood and commissioned as ‘brides’. After Olufuko, bride, is free to get a man and get married any time regardless the age.Pregnancy before marriage after Olufuko is acceptable. People under the age of 16 are considered minors under the Namibian Constitution.There are also some additional photos taken on different dates.

Back ground

This festival is the first festival to be practiced after it was banned by Christianity. It was planned years back for Traditional Culture, Agriculture and Business and Trade Fair Expo as well as Arts purposes.[1]
