Omalodu is an Oshiwambo traditional beer, made using only (3) ingredient water ,sorghum and Omahangu flour which are local ingredients that Ovakwanya people grows in their fields. (Omalodu) is one of oshiwambo most preferred drink that people brew in the northern part of Namibia Especially in the four (4) O regions, which are Oshikoto,Ohangwena,Omusati and Oshikoto. Omalodu has been the brewed since the early 1014. .Omalodu is usually brewed for people to drink at Special occasions e.g. weddings, birthdays, for visitors and when kings or traditional leaders have certain function.


Here are a few steps on how to Prepare the oshiwambo traditional drink (omalodu ilya)

  • STEP:1 - For Omalodu to be perfectly brewed first, sorghum flour should be soaked in water for approximate 2 hours to bring out the flavors and then you take a pot of water, add soaked sorghum flour and stir. Take a jar from the mixture (oshixupeela) and keep it aside to let it cool down for few minutes.
  • Step: 2-Let the mixture boils for an hour and keeps stirring until the form on top disappears and turned dark brown.
  • Step 3-When the foam disappears remove the pot from the fire, pour a bucket of water and let the mixture cools down for a few minutes or so. Add the mixture that you have set aside in step one.
  • Step 4-Pour the mixture in a sack to drain the water from the mixture (oshixupeela).
  • Step 5- The water obtained is than put in a traditional brown calabash called (Oshikola or Oshitoo) and mixed with Omahangu flour for fermentation.

The beverage will be ready after 6 to 7 hours.Then from there people will drink it using traditional Caps (Eholo) and (Omindo).
