11 are primary schools. The secondary schools are Hastings Academy, The Burgess Hill Academy and The St Leonards Academy.

In June 2018 the trust secured £298,650 from the National College for Teaching and Leadership, for a project for the youngest disadvantaged children in Hastings primary schools.[1]

History

edit

The University of Brighton began supporting academies in 2008, as part of its commitment to improving educational opportunities. After being involved in the formation of two secondary academies – The Hastings Academy and The St Leonards Academy – from three under performing schools, the university took the role of lead sponsor in the Hastings Academies Trust (established in 2010). Subsequently seven infant and primary schools joined the Hastings Academies Trust.

The University of Brighton Academies Trust was established in 2014 to build on the university’s success in Hastings and broaden the work of the Trust to Sussex and the surrounding areas. This created another network of one secondary and five infant and primary academies.

After working closely together for several years, the University of Brighton Academies Trust and the Hastings Academies Trust merged in September 2017.

edit

The University of Brighton[2] is the sponsor of the University of Brighton Academies Trust. The close connection with the university allows them to draw on the expertise of its education experts and external contacts – something that greatly benefits all the academies and their pupils.

Our Future

edit

The University of Brighton Academies Trust are currently working to welcome a new school in Burgess Hill to their family. The Bedelands Academy [3]will form part of the new Brookleigh housing development and will offer exceptional educational experiences to new and existing residents in the 3,500 home development and local area.

The academy will be an all through school, taking learners from 3-16 years old on two sites; one for nursery and primary aged children, and one for secondary aged children with plans for a nursery, a support centre for students with special educational needs and disabilities, and comprehensive sporting facilities, the inspiring installation is set to transform education in the Burgess Hill area along with the other members of the University of Brighton Academies Trust family of schools.

The secondary school site will be highly energy efficient with very low carbon emissions and operational costs. As such, it aims to be the first school in West Sussex to achieve Passivhaus Accreditation, the highest independent standard of energy-efficient buildings.
