Gameplay

edit

The bot mimicked the popular game genre Snake, whilst also making the controls into a more user friendly and collaborative scheme for social media. Users of X (known as Twitter during the project’s run) controlled the player/snake via retweeting to turn the snake anti-clockwise or liking to turn the snake clockwise.

The bot posted every 30 minutes, and would update accordingly to which value was higher.

There are also special snake modes not included in the original snake version.

  • Devil (signified by purple) - Snake moves in the opposite direction of the chosen move.[2]
  • Glutted (signified by green) - Snake dies when eating an apple.[2]
  • Charged (signified by red) - Snake continues to move until reaching an obstacle.[2]

Development

edit

PolyMars announced development on his profile on October 4, 2020.[3] In a developer log, he states that the code was based off an old Java project of Snake he created in class.[4]

The whole bot was coded in Twitter4J,[5] a Java fork for Twitter Bots and ran on PolyMars' personal computer.

Legacy

edit

A spiritual successor/port to Twitter Plays Snake was released on December 21, 2020, a Discord bot dubbed Team Snake.[6]
