NewTopic: This is a visible anchor for the active link on the Template page.

User notes

edit

This template is for splitting talk page threads.

Introduction

edit

The template allows one parameter, which is the name of the destination section. The default destination section name is "NewSection". Example:
{{TopicBranch|PolarBears}}

will display as

[TopicBranch - PolarBears]

Hovering over "TopicBranch" will show the destination URL (in at least one browser), and clicking on "TopicBranch" will go to the destination.  Hovering over "PolarBears" will show the message:

Click on "TopicBranch" to see related material being discussed elsewhere
edit

In order to create a backlink at the destination, a topicbranch can be combined with an anchor at the origin, for example:

{{Visible anchor|PolarBearsBackLink}} {{TopicBranch|PolarBears}} <small>[inserted by ~~~~}</small>

Then at the new section, another {{topicbranch}} can be added to provide a linkback:

== PolarBears ==
{{TopicBranch|PolarBearsBackLink}}

[TopicBranch – PolarBearsBackLink]
Ok, but we also need to talk about polar bears, let's do that in this new section called PolarBears.

Hi there, the correct place to put template documentation is not on the talk page. It should be on the template page between noinclude tags, or (better) on its own documentation page at Template:TopicBranch/doc and then transcluded onto the template page with {{documentation}}
Can I also suggest that you open an account. This will give you a talk page where other editors can communicate with you, amongst many other advantages. SpinningSpark 13:31, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
(1) I tried, but IP addresses can't make /doc pages.  (2) I tried the <noinclude></noinclude> without success, there is progress in that I put an anchor just above "User notes" on this page for the active link in the template on the template page.  (3) Putting the documentation here makes sense in one way in that this template is intended for a talk page.  For example, here you can click on the forward and backlinks and see them work.  (4) I think that this is good enough under WP:BOLD and I don't WP:OWN this documentation, and things seem to be stable if others want to improve it.  As far as getting an account, I've been WP:BITTEN, so at this point I prefer to put up with inconveniences like being unable to make pages.  I'm happy with what this project has accomplished.  I appreciate your assistance, RB  66.217.117.191 (talk) 00:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've created the page so you should be able to edit it now. Sorry you've got bitten, common problem here. Editing as an IP is no protection against being picked on though; likely to be worse if anything, so imho you are still better off with an account. SpinningSpark 19:03, 27 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
