Games

edit

If we're going to add obscure games, perhaps we should split the games section in two. I think most readers would like to see a list of the common games. Some of these games have been played little if it all in centuries. A second section, which could become quite large, could hold those games for those interested. This random selection of games is bizarre. Either everything and only these listed in the "gambling games" category should be included, or a link to the gambling games category itself should be there. 2005 (talk) 05:22, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well the template has a section called "gambling games" that was probably created when there were fewer articles and perhaps the creator even assumed that there weren't that many. I guess over time some editors have added gambling game articles to it and others haven't, resulting in a somewhat random list. I was going to add all those in the category until I saw how many there were. So I made the following comments on O3000's page:
"You have a good point. I was surprised at the number of gambling card games that weren't included, but I see from Category:Gambling games that there are 91 links already and I know there are more to come. I also agree in principle that any game with a scoring system can be used for gambling, but clearly there is a genre of games that are, or historically have been, used primarily for gambling (e.g. casino games, banking games, etc.). So I totally support coming up with some guidelines that bound those. But I also recognise that this template is very much a top level one and covers a broad area. If we add every gambling topic, including all the games, it will become unwieldy. So my inclination is to create a separate navbox template purely for gambling card games, broken down into their subtypes, and leave this template to cover what are considered to be the top level topics. Again, guidelines will be needed to keep the gambling card game template itself in bounds. HTH."
I'm happy to create the separate gambling card games template to pull those articles together. :) Bermicourt (talk) 08:59, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
A gambling card games template would be a good idea if that is what you are highlighting. This template was just created by somebody who wanted to do it one day. Since it is "gambling" and not even "gambling games", it could include almost anything in the world. It originally was hijacked from being the template of the gambling project so I'd like to see it deleted and prevented from being recreated like Template:Games. 2005 (talk) 09:10, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Options:
  1. Removing and salting the template.
  2. Keeping the template, but removing the games section as I think the other sections are of value.
  3. Defining the games section as current casino games would be useful for most readers; but doesn’t really match the general title of gambling and might get out of control.
  4. Just link to the gambling games cat as suggested by 2005.
  5. Gambling card games is too large. You could bet on go fish. I think there is a casino game based on war.
I prefer #4 or a combination of #3 and #4. O3000 (talk) 12:20, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Then there is the terminology section which is just as random as the games part. A link to the gambling terminology category would be better than the random handful of links there now. If not salted, then I'll agree #4 + doing similar for the terminology section would be a great improvement over the current situation. 2005 (talk) 00:08, 24 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Any other input from anyone? O3000 (talk) 00:59, 24 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
My final input is I encourage you to go ahead and change it. :) 2005 (talk) 01:32, 24 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm happy for this template to be sharpened up and for the card games to be removed from it and placed in a separate gambling card games template with some guidelines about what to include. It will focus on games generally recognised in the sources as gambling games e.g. casino games and those classed by state authorities as such. Bermicourt (talk) 01:01, 25 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
