Western Pacific had its own depots in California and Nevada and did not use the modern Amtrak depots

edit

This list has a few errors, that are easy to make and likely to be re-introduced when fixed. The root cause of these is an assumption that the former Western Pacific service used the same route and depots as the modern service, which uses the former Southern Pacific rails in Nevada and California. As such I'll state here for reference:

Winnemucca Nevada: As is visible on any detailed map of the area, the former Western Pacific line did not pass through downtown, and could not have used the downtown depot today used by Amtrak. The WP surely had a separate depot on the northern edge of town. Checking on Google maps there is a small building next to the former WP tracks that has the remnants of a concrete walkway to the tracks that is a likely candidate.[1]

Sacramento California: Similarly, as is visible on any detailed map, the WP line ran north-south paralleling 19th street in Sacramento (the ROW is partially used by the Blue Line (Sacramento RT) ), and could not have used the Amtrak/Southern Pacific depot. I read somewhere on www.wplives.org that the former Western Pacific Depot is now an Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant on the corner of 19th and J streets.[2]

Oakland California: Per a WP time table online [3] the old WP depot was located on the corner of 3rd and Washington. Doing a google earth overview, there are no longer rail tracks at this location, but fairly easy to see how there once could have been. There is still visible a spur from the port leading towards 3rd street. Dave (talk) 17:23, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Digging some more I found some additional resources, some are vague but do confirm the WP had it's own depots in these cities:
  • Sacramento: (confirmed, this one was easy, Found multiple reliables sources from newspapers and museums that the WP depot is now an Old Sphegetti Factory Restarurant in midtown, NOT the modern Amtrak (former SP) depot.
  • Winnemucca:
  • Elko:
    • Similarly, the WP had its own depot in Elko. However, the article for Elko Station addresses this, so I have kept the link to the Elko station for now. Should someone revamp the articles on the Elko train stations past and present, this may need to be changed.
