Template talk:Birth date/Archive 1
What is this template for? edit
I'm afraid I don't see the usefulness of this template. Does it have any advantage over [[yyyy-mm-dd]] to compensate for the reduced readability? Powers T 00:08, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm phasing it out. See Template:child actor birth date, which automatically classifies a child actor into one of three categories. --Uncle Ed 18:39, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
categorization? edit
Could this be amended to include a categorization into the "YEAR births" categories? — pd_THOR | =/\= | 19:44, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes? No? — pd_THOR | =/\= | 18:36, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, please, that would be most useful. Michael Bednarek 07:00, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Use in hCard microformat edit
I think it would be useful to retain, and expand, this template, so that it can provide the bday attribute of the hCard microformat (see also projects microformats. If anyone's interested, I can give more details. Andy Mabbett 21:57, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Done, have to use extra display:none span since MediaWiki doesn't support abbr. #time parserfunction was useles for this since it only supports dates after 1970. —Quarl (talk) 2007-04-19 01:40Z

- Thank you. I now need to update the documentation, accordingly. I suggest it be moved to a separate /doc page. Andy Mabbett 09:55, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Done. The documentation is in Template:Birth date and age/doc and is not protected. It is shared between {{birth date}} and {{birth date and age}}, so please update it accordingly. CMummert · talk 12:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Leading zeros edit
These should be suppressed, see for example Hagigat Rzayeva. Rich Farmbrough, 20:17 5 May 2007 (GMT).
- "My bad." I should supress the zero, the template re-adds it for the ISO function. Rich Farmbrough, 20:39 5 May 2007 (GMT).
Flexibility in month format edit
I've tweaked the code so that the month can be entered in any form for the hCard part as well as the visible part. I hope it works. Also, does anyone object to a comma between day and year when df=yes? Geometry guy 21:22, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Usage contrary to Manual of Style edit
Referring to WP:DATE, it would be apprecated if this template was not used in articles where International Dating format is indicated. --Pete 01:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- {{Euro birth date}} can be used in those cases. -- Patleahy 04:44, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Use when month/date unknown? edit
Can this template be used when only the year of birth is known? {{Birth date|1880}} gives [[ [[ {{{3}}}]]]] 1880. Edurant 02:20, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- For that, use {{Birth year}}. Tlesher 15:25, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
What is the point of this template? edit
What is the point of this template other than to obfuscate what should be straightforward information? We already have the birth and death dates as metadata thanks to Persondata, so I fail to see what the usefulness of this is. Kaldari 22:39, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Please see Wikipedia_talk:Metadata_standardization for further discussion of this issue. Kaldari 23:28, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

df parameter edit
This could be better explained! I assume- after much thought- that this stands for "day first". Regards TINYMARK 13:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- I added more information the the explanation of these options. I also changed the examples so they show what a non-logged in reader will see when the options are used. -- PatLeahy (talk) 03:41, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
