This template is supposed to assist in permalink archiving.

Method 1

edit

Here is one method, easier than the second, but not as attractive.

  1. Confirm that {{REVISIONID}} is there and copy the ID.
  2. Edit the current page and in the archive box (You will need one) add:
    {{permarc|Archive number|Revision ID|Date(s)|title=Your username (optional)}} to the bottom.
    Example: {{permarc|3|160795734|Aug/07-Sep/07|title=Coastergeekperson04}}
    Will add: Archive 3- Aug/07-Sep/07
    If you leave out the user name, it defaults to the user name of the talk page it is used on.
  3. Before saving, remove the old talk page content.

Method 2

edit

This one will not require {{REVISIONID}}, and looks better, but has more steps.

  1. Remove all of your headings (including the archive box) and replace them with {{archive}} <br /><b>Archive ID</b>:{{REVISIONID}}
  2. Copy down the "Archive ID".
  3. Undo your edits- but don't save it!
  4. Remove all of the content of your talk page, use the template as described above.
  5. Fix your edit summary and save.

A benefit to permalink-based archiving is that it archives pages only when needed, such as when the page gets full. This is good for slowly-expanding pages, where a time-based archiving system is unfeasible.
