Usage

edit

Place this template alongside the bolded name at the beginning of a biographical article. It will generate a footnote explaining that the surname of the person is patronymic and that the person should be reffered to by their given name, helping readers refer to the person correctly. It requires the article to include {{notelist}}.

This template includes two mandatory parameter and several optional parameters:

  • |1=: required, the given name of the person
  • |2=: required, the surname of the person
  • |note=: optional, if "note=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The abbreviation 's/o' or 'd/o', if used, means 'son of' or 'daughter of' respectively." These abbreviations are sometimes used by Indians in Singapore. If "note=off" or the "note" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed.
  • |notemalay=: if "notemalay=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The abbreviation 'a/l' (anak lelaki) or 'a/p' (anak perempuan), if used, means 'son of' or 'daughter of' in Malay respectively." These abbreviations are sometimes used by Indians in Malaysia. If "notemalay=off" or if the "notemalay" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed.
