The History of Parliament is a series of works ultimately intended to form a complete history of the Westminster Parliament. The portions currently published, as of 2015, are divided chronologically, and consist of surveys of the House of Commons, descriptions of elections and politics in each electoral constituency, and biographies of individual Members of Parliament. Histories for the periods 1386–1421, 1509–1558, 1558–1603, 1604–1629, 1660–1690, 1690–1715, 1715–1754, 1754–1790, 1790–1820, and 1820–1832 have been published, and histories covering 1422–1504, 1640–1660, and 1832–1868, as well as part of the history of the House of Lords, are under way. All of the published works were placed online in 2011.

This template allows the citation of biographies of individual members through the {{Cite encyclopedia}} template. The first, unnamed parameter to this template is the first year covered by the volume being cited (e.g., "1754" for the 1754–1790 volume), and cannot be omitted. Other parameters are passed to {{Cite encyclopedia}}.

Description of fields

See {{Cite encyclopedia}} for detailed semantics of these fields. The parameters encyclopedia, editorn-last, editorn-first, editorn-link, and year are automatically supplied by the template based on the first year the work covers. The entries are assumed to have been read online, so the publisher is given as "History of Parliament Trust" (rather than the publishers for the printed works).

  • last: last name of the author.
  • first: first name of the author. (The author's name can also be specified as a single parameter, author, an alias for last.)
  • authorlink: Optional; for authors with a Wikipedia entry, enter the title of their article here. (Do not include braces.)
  • author1, last1, first1, authorlink1... Up to two authors for a given article are supported.
  • title: title of biography (the name of the Member of Parliament described; usually includes dates of birth and death and principal residence) or the name of the constituency
  • url: URL of this article at the History of Parliament Online.
  • accessdate: date on which the article was read at History of Parliament Online.
