Comment: four citations for hook, for example, Warner, Ezra J. Generals in Gray: Lives of the Confederate Commanders. Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1959. ISBN 0-8071-0823-5. p. 236 says little or no formal schooling; taught himself, then taught others. All four also note office and other facts in citation.

Article definitely new enough and long enough. Offline hook accepted in good faith. Having done several biographies of folks from this period, I know this isn't as uncommon as it may sound today, so I'm betting it's true. Only comment is that some sentences have a lot of in-line cites tied to them. Why do we really need six citations for "William Flank Perry was born on March 12, 1823 in Jackson County, Georgia."?
