Transgender sex worker edit

  • ... that discrimination within the medical community and social stigma prevent transgender sex workers from accessing necessary medical care?
    • ALT1:... that legal discrimination and lack of job protections keep transgender sex workers from obtaining jobs outside of the sex work industry?

  • Hi there, this is my first time submitting a DYK nomination and I forgot to add sources for these hooks! Here's the source for the first hook: Scorgie, Fiona (2013). "'We are despised in the hospitals': sex workers' experiences of accessing health care in four African countries". Culture, Health & Sexuality. 15: 450–465.. And the second one: "Sex Workers | HIV by Group | HIV/AIDS | CDC". www.cdc.gov. Retrieved 2016-12-01.. Sorry for the confusion!
  • @Brookeenglish: Sadly, this doesn't qualify for DYK because it hasn't been recently expanded. Under our rules, expansion means that the prose size is increased five-fold. As roughly 6,600 characters were in the article in January, you would need to expand this to 33,000 characters or so for this to be eligible; more than 3 times what's there now. That's not really feasible. On the other hand, with some work, this might be eligible for good article. The whole point of all these recognition processes is to get you advice to improve the article, so I'll still give you some feedback here.

First, I think you've done a good job of laying out the causes and effects of transgender sex workers, but you haven't done a great job describing the topic itself. For instance, what types of sex work do transgender men and women enter into? What is their prevalence compared to cisgender sex workers? It's important to summarize the state of transgender sex work itself before you go into all the causes and effects.

Second, remove some of the basic transgender info (how to define transgender men and women, for instance). This is covered by a wikilink to transgender, and it's not uniquely relevant to this narrow topic. Third, holistically go through the article and ensure everything is specific to transgender sex workers, not just transgender people in general. For instance, the first paragraph of "Physical and sexual violence" can be summed up as a single sentence in the following paragraph, as it's about transgender people more broadly. Something like "Transgender people face an increased risks of violence, harassment, and sexual assault. Participating in the sex industry comes with an even higher risk of experiencing violence." as your first sentence, then continue on with the paragraph as-is. Be sure to back up all claims with data specific to transgender sex workers, not just data relating to sex workers in general. Let me know if you have any questions on the article's talk page, being sure to ping me. ~ Rob13Talk 01:17, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
