New Fortress, Corfu edit

New Fortress of Corfu

Created by Dr.K. (talk). Self nominated at 03:22, 28 November 2013 (UTC).

  • The article presents a contradiction: per the lede and the references cited there, (as well as a quick browsing in the web) the fortress was constructed between 1572–1645. The article does not elaborate on that, but then claims that it was built after the 1716 siege. So what is what? Otherwise, the article is in good shape and would have no trouble passing. • The construction was complex and in many stages so the dates may have referred to an earlier construction phase. I erased the contradictory dates from the lead pending more study of the building process. I also removed the references to Schulenburg's expansion pending more study of his actions, so the claim that it was built after 1716 has been removed. The remaining text has no other contradictions. Thank you Kostas for pointing that out. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:48, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Well, ahem, that removes the inconsistency, but it also removes any reference to dating of the structure. I would much prefer to have the article complete in this regard before passing this. Take your time, I will also have a look to see what I can find. Cheers, Constantine 18:15, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
  • No. The reference now is from 1577-1588 from Miller's book which is a reliable source: After the fortification works were completed the Venetians built the New Fortress between 1577-1588.... It is still at the origins section but not at the lead. Also this structure was built in phases and expanded several times so the dating is not uniform. We can of course investigate the dating and improve it but I don't think the DYK nomination should be contingent on finding a uniform date because this may not exist. • I have four reliable references from Tataki, Stamatopoulos, Katsaros and Miller. Stamatopoulos gives a date from 1572-1645 and Miller 1577-1588, Tataki 1576-1588 closely matching Miller and Katsaros gives the start date as 1577 agreeing with Miller. I have added the following text: The exact dating of the structure is not established but accounts vary between 1576 or 1577-1588,[5][3] and 1572-1645.[1] The start date for the construction is also reported as 1577 by Corfiote historian Katsaros.[6] . I hope this is enough for now. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:14, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Good, I am satisfied. Well done! Only QPQ review is outstanding, and then the article is a go! Constantine 09:35, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
