Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards edit

  • ... that the Penney-Missouri Awards were described as the Pulitzer for Women's Page journalism? Source: Kimberly Wilmot Voss in the academic journalJournalism Historyvol32 Spring 2006 pp43-50, unfortunately not available except with library login "The awards were often described as the Pulitzer Prize of feature writing"
    • ALT1:... that the Penney-Missouri Awards were the only nationwide recognition for Women's Page journalists at a time when few women journalists had other opportunities to write or edit for newspapers? Source: "By 1900 most newspapers had women's sections, which were staffed by women journalists, and these sections continued to be the main venues for women journalists for much of the twentieth century" and "the Penney-Missouri Awards were the only nationwide recognition specifically for women's page"" Source: Kimberly Wilmot Voss in the academic journalJournalism Historyvol32 Spring 2006 pp43-50, unfortunately not available except with library login
    • ALT 2: ... that the Penney-Missouri Awards were sponsored by J C Penney in hopes of improving Women’s Pages where his company advertised? Source: Kimberly Wilmot Voss in the academic journalJournalism Historyvol32 Spring 2006 pp43-50, unfortunately not available except with library login "Penney chose Missouri's School of Journalism to conduct the program because he...believed the school had the prestige necessary to reshape women's sections into effective vehicles for his company's advertising."

  • Long enough, 1780 char. New enough, created November 18, nom 23 November. No apparent copyvios; link to off-line source [1] confirms text duplications are direct quotes. Neutrally written. Fourth paragraph lacks citation. Text mainly relies on one source, which is problematic, as does not meet the requirement for reliable sourceS. Page numbers should be individually cited. The second source given appears to be a primary source, i.e. text does not indicate a curator thus was probably supplied by the donor of the archive. This [2] and this [3] might be helpful. QPQ done. No image.
  • Hook 0 is short enough 91 char. Verified by the cited source as having been created for women's pages and the comparison (page 43). Alt1 hook is short enough, 191 char. Verified by cited source (pg 44) which confirms few opportunities for women journalists in 1960s and "only nationwide" claim. Alt2 hook is short enough, 126 chars. I think it's problematic, as JC Penney typically refers to the firm, which is not specifically named in the article, (which I found a little odd, as most know the firm not the man). Information is verified as stated (page 46). My preference would be for original hook. SusunW (talk) 16:15, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi, SusunW and thanks for starting review! You're correct that I've used a single source plus what is probably the curation notes for the collection; thanks for the additional suggestions. I've been continuing to research and am hoping to add, but didn't want to miss the date for nominating. Will do on the specific page numbers for each assertion, and didn't realize I had a naked paragraph lol.
Re: JC Penney -- I'm completely neutral on spelling his name out completely or using the initials, only did it for brevity's sake really. valereee (talk) 17:47, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
My opinion, which counts for nada, is that you should mention the company in the article so people are clear he is that Penney. Ping me when you have addressed the issues. I try to watch this page, but don't always get the notices. ;) SusunW (talk) 18:42, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
SusunW I think I've fixed things, except for JC Penney in ALT2, which I wasn't sure how to most effectively address -- recast vs spell out vs just strike that hook. Any suggestions appreciated! valereee (talk) 20:06, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Valereee I started to look at it again, but got a phone call about a family emergency. I'll get back to it as soon as I can. In the mean time, can you fix the citation about Hosakawa. It should be at the end of the sentence. It would also be recommended that you not have so many direct quotes from the sources. If you can reword them in your own voice, that would be great. The Pulitzer one is probably the only one that needs to be a direct quote. SusunW (talk) 20:57, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Will do! valereee (talk) 21:00, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Okey-doke SusunW done; no hurry, hope all is well ETA: Oh, I did leave the one quote: "more than just society notices and photographs of brides" because I really like that one, but if you still hate it LMK valereee (talk) 21:10, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Valereee I think you are GTG. Much better with the additional refs and copyedits, giving page numbers, etc. Thanks for your thoughtfulness. My brother is in the hospital having tests run. Not like I can do anything, he's 4,000 miles away, but I'm on standby in case I need to head to the northern tundra (anything where the temperature is below 80F (26.5C), as I don't do cold. Any of the hooks are fine, but as I said, my preference is 0. SusunW (talk) 22:51, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, and first did some editing to tighten up the presentation. I like ALT0 too, but the source says "Pulitzer Prize of feature writing", not of "women's page journalism". Would you like to use the quote and also mention women's pages somehow? Yoninah (talk) 19:16, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Hm, how the heck did I manage that? Totally open to any solution. Do you think it would be too long if we mentioned both feature writing and women's page journalism? If we can do both,

ALT3... that the Penney-Missouri Awards for women's page journalism were described as the "Pulitzer Prize of feature writing"? valereee (talk) 19:23, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Yes, thanks, that works better. Since you provided the quote above, I changed "for" to "of" and added quotes. Restoring tick for ALT3 per SusunW's review. Yoninah (talk) 19:40, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
