Mary Emilie Holmes edit

  • ... that the first woman elected to the Geological Society of America, Mary Emilie Holmes, was also one of the cofounders of an historically black college?

Good work. Reference one is a concern. Its a scholarly google presentation that contains a lot of useful facts and some good sources in terms of pictures and scans of documents. However I don't think it qualitfies as what we would call a reliable source. I suspect the presentation has been created from what we would call reliable sources. If the presentation was published or had been peer reviewed and there was evidence of that then it would be better. Is it possible to remove or amend the ref to the google doc? Also should this article be called "Mary Holmes" as the college that is named after her does not include her middle name as this artilcles title does. Thanks for the contribution. I believe we will accept it. Victuallers (talk) 13:23, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
  • I'm glad you liked the article, and I think I can rework most of the refs to the Google doc, though I did think it would qualify as reliable because it struck me as being well-researched. It will take a day or two as I am travelling at present. Re article title: the college is really named after Mary E. Holmes's mother, Mary D. Holmes, as it was founded in her honor. So for clarity (because of the name similarities), I thought it would be best to create this entry in Mary E.'s full name.Alafarge (talk) 13:54, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
  • I have replaced all the references from the Google docs source with references to other reliable sources.Alafarge (talk) 19:19, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Works for me. Good length, good sources and one of these is linked to the hook. No image, neutral, no paraphrasing spotted. Good article. I have suggested the alt below but the existing hook is fine. Thanks. Anymore? Victuallers (talk) 20:50, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I prefer the original hook because of the 'first' achievement and because I liked how her life connected to both these back-to-back monthlong celebrations of history (black history, women's history). Happy to defer to more experienced DYK hook-crafters, though.Alafarge (talk) 21:31, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
