Source: "旧虻田町市街地近傍には、明治以降、ほぼ３０年周期で噴火を繰り返している有珠山があり、直近では平成１２年に噴火しました。その際、旧虻田町市街地は、火砕流等に襲われる可能性のある区域に含まれるため、住民に避難勧告が出されましたが、道央道が先に通行止めとなり、国道３７号が唯一の避難路として重要な役割を果たしました。当該道路の整備により、走行環境が改善され、円滑な避難に寄与します" [1]
