Jagannath Prasad Das

edit

Created/expanded by Psubhashish (talk). Self nom at 17:56, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

The article (and the cited article from The Hindu) say J. P. Das was the third (not second) Oriya writer to receive a Saraswati Samman. Is there a mistake in the proposed hook? Also, the hook is likely incomprehensible to non-Indians in its current form; I would suggest something like this:
[ALT1] ... that Jagannath Prasad Das is the third person from Odisha to receive India's Saraswati Samman literary award?
Finally, the article itself contains numerous grammar issues and desperately needs a once-over by an editor who is fluent in English (I may be able to do this myself in a few hours' time). contained numerous grammar issues and desperately needed copyediting work by an editor who is fluent in English; I did this myself just now. Aside from these points, the article appears OK for DYK (though I am new to DYK reviewing and would welcome another opinion). — Richwales 22:53, 16 May 2012 (UTC) 06:23, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Richwales for helping, please let me know if I need to do anything more? I like the hook you proposed and changed it. Is that fine for the submission?--SubhaUtter2me! 06:49, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
There is actually one other point I'm not sure about here. Your hook says Das was the third "person from Orissa" to receive this award — but the article text (confirmed by the cited source) says he was the third "Oriya writer" to receive the award. Now, my own understanding (probably more detailed here than that of most non-Indians, who will never have heard of Oriya or Orissa) is that "Oriya" is a language, and also an ethnic group, and that the three concepts "person from Orissa", "person who speaks Oriya", and "person of Oriya ancestry" are mostly equivalent, but I'm not 100% sure about making this substitution in the hook. I think it might be better to stay closer to the article and the source, and replace "person from Orissa" in the hook with "Oriya writer" — but then there's a valid question whether the article in The Hindu, when it said "Oriya writer", meant "writer whose works are written in the Oriya language" or "writer who is a member of the Oriya ethnic group", or both. The word "Oriya" (being totally unfamiliar to most readers) will need to be wikilinked to something, but should it be wikilinked to Oriya language, or to Oriya people? And whatever you (Subha) think about this, I think I'd like to hear from other, more experienced DYK reviewers as to what they think, or if they think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, or if they might possibly think this question is unanswerable and that the unresolvable ambiguity dooms this DYK nom. — Richwales 07:43, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
It'd be better to link it in this way [[Oriya language|Oriya]], as the page is about the writer it's important to link Oriya language to the hook rather than linking it to Oriya people. You think that'd be appropriate? --SubhaUtter2me! 11:30, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
So, then, you're proposing the following revised hook:
ALT2 ... that Jagannath Prasad Das is the third Oriya writer to receive India's Saraswati Samman literary award?
I would be willing to accept this. However, as I said, I am new to the DYK area and am inviting a second opinion from a more experienced reviewer. — Richwales 14:06, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes, changed as you have suggested, is that fine? Thanks a lot again buddy!--SubhaUtter2me! 06:16, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
As I said, I am waiting for some other, more experienced DYK reviewer to jump in here and either confirm my opinion or make other points. I've done as much as I can — especially since I played a significant role in shaping the current version of the hook, I should not be the person to give the ultimate approval — let's wait for someone else to come along and pass judgement on our work here. — Richwales 06:48, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT2 good to go. New article, 2204 Characters, hook size fine. QPQ meets as nominator's first dyk. Subha, no need to change the original hook when reviewer suggests a new hook. Rich, I am neither more experienced nor rich, but I have reviewed more than 20 nom., hope thats fine :-). -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 10:47, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
