  • Date and length are good. QPQ is not applicable as this is the first DYK nomination (welcome!) The image is properly licensed to the public domain, used in the article with alt text, and is perfectly suitable here at DYK, but it should be exported to Wikimedia Commons for non-English usage by hitting the tab that says "export to wikimedia commons". I would change the caption here to simply "Hooks Island". Neutrality is good. Earwig's copyvio detector shows no problem. Each paragraph must have a citation, so please put one into the paragraph ending with "beneath the mud." The article must be changed from stub to start classification on the talk page. Both hooks are good, supported by refs. I like the first hook for its greater mystery. Binksternet (talk) 15:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
  • All right, how about now. {} 18:28, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I don't see the ALT0 hook fact in the source given. The source says that it is prohibited to enter the marshes, and boaters are not allowed to land without authorization, but where does it say people are not allowed to go to the island? Yoninah (talk) 21:54, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
My thought was that if it's an island, and boats are not allowed to land, then the intention is clear that the general public is not allowed on the island. Binksternet (talk) 22:00, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
  • But if the source says boaters are not allowed to land without authorization, the implication is that it is possible for boaters to get authorization to land and it does happen, which contradicts ALT0: "nobody" is an absolute, while "without authorization" is far from it. • Change "nobody is" to "unauthorized persons are not"? What do you think, Jacob? Binksternet (talk) 21:25, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Sounds fine to me. The original quote from the site description is this:
"Boat users need to be sensitive to wildlife, high tide refugia, and marsh habitat, observe buffer distances, and not land in any location besides the Sailing Station, including Hooks Island, located across from the Sailing Station. Additionally, there are areas located nearby where a boater who lands inappropriately could disturb nesting Western burrowing owls (Mountain View) or Western snowy plovers (Alviso or Ravenswood). The City of Palo Alto Municipal Code prohibits trampling vegetation and/or harassing wildlife and non‐permitted activities in the marsh constitute violations and are subject to fines of $1,000 or more. Nearby lands owned by the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge also prohibit unauthorized entry into marshes. Rangers have not had problems with boaters landing in the marshes, with the exception of emergencies where someone had to make an unauthorized landing. Most of the problems within the Preserve with people entering the marsh have been photographers who enter from the road. "
So it could be changed to "boaters are not", or "unauthorized persons are not", etc (the island is part of the marshlands). Obviously there are exceptions (like park rangers, ecologists with permits, utility maintenance personnel since there are transmission towers on the island), so that seems like it'd be clearer. {} 22:18, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
  • Explain too much and ALT0 is no longer quirky. Maybe we should just go with ALT1. Yoninah (talk) 22:37, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
  • Weighing the options, I'm calling this one for ALT0 modified, striking out ALT1. Binksternet (talk) 01:27, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
