Epodes (Horace)

  • ... that a hostile reviewer of Uncle Tom's Cabin likened the book to a witch from Horace's Epodes? Source: "Perhaps the most disturbing allusion to the Epodes that I have encountered also belongs to the context of the American civil war. This is an unsigned review of Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin [...]: '[T]he airy phantom which flitted before our earlier fancy, is transmuted into an aged and haggard crone, who wears the mask, pads her shrivelled limbs, and clothes herself in a deceptive garb, that she may steal more securely into our unsuspicious favor, mumble her incantations before we recognise them as the song of Canidia, and distill into our ears the venom of her tongue, before any apprehension is awakened.' " Oliensis (2016) 229-30.

Overall: manuscripts? might be worth adding a picture so that this gets the first, picture slot—and, likely, the most views; more than good to go, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 22:31, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

switching the approval to a query: don't know if you're interested in a potential ALT? Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 00:44, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

ALT1: ... that a hostile reviewer of Uncle Tom's Cabin likened the book to a witch (her name pictured, alongside garlic) from Horace's Epodes?
ALT2: ... that a hostile reviewer of Uncle Tom's Cabin likened the book to a witch (her name visible above the hole pictured) from Horace's Epodes?

  • @Maculosae tegmine lyncis: thanks for your review and the suggestion. I think it's a very good idea - I was planning to add an image of a manuscript but didn't quite know where to get it. Regarding the hook, I think ALT2 is better because ALT1's 'alongside garlic' might be confusing to readers. Thanks again, I think the image really improves the article and the hook. Good to go once more, with ALT2, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 09:27, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
