Béatrice Saubin edit

  • ... that 22-year-old Frenchwoman Béatrice Saubin was sentenced to death by hanging after 534 grams (1.177 lb) of pure grade heroin was found in her suitcase at Penang International Airport, Malaysia? Source: "Miss Saubin, the attractive high-living secretary to an Arab sheik, became the first foreigner sentenced to death under Malaysia's strict drug laws last June. She cheated the gallows last month when the federal court reduced her punishment on appeal to life imprisonment. ... Miss Saubin was arrested at Penang Airport on Jan. 27, 1980, by customs agents who found 1.5 pounds of pure grade heroin stuffed into hidden compartments of her suitcase." (and UPI)

  • Created same day so clearly new enough and 4x longer than minimum. Very well cited. The source (UPI) used in the nomination for the hook said 1.5 pounds, but the hook itself says 1.177 pounds. However, the other two sources put the amount at 1.117 pounds (534g), so UPI seems to have made a conversion mistake and I think 534g is correct. The hook is on the long side and I find has too many extra words that don't add a lot. What do you think of a shortened version.

  • ALT1: ... that 22-year-old Frenchwoman Béatrice Saubin was sentenced to death by hanging in Malaysia after conviction of smuggling 534 grams (1.177 lb) of pure grade heroin?

@MB: Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The facts are correct in ALT1 but not correct, since she maintained her innocence about the smuggling. If you don't like the original hook, maybe write:
Yoninah, I'm not sure I understand your comment (correct, but not correct). So what if she maintained her innocence (most criminals do), innocent or not she was convicted. The salient points of the hook are that she was sentenced to death for smuggling heroin. I think the bit about it being found in her suitcase is inconsequential, and the hook is shorter and better without it. I do like the first part of ALT2 better that ALT1, so I'm adding another variation:
  • ALT3: ... that the Malaysian High Court sentenced 22-year-old Frenchwoman Béatrice Saubin to death by hanging for smuggling 534 grams (1.177 lb) of pure grade heroin?
  • Both hooks are factual, within length, etc. Promoter can choose. No other problems, so good to go. MB 15:23, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
